A group of 40 of us spent the day at Newark yesterday, this is my first visit to the museum. We were made very welcome by all. We even had the bonus of viewing the inside of the Hastings (TG517) and the Shackleton (WR977) for three hours, the latter which I once flew in. We were able to go right into the cockpit areas and we had expert guides on hand to answer any questions, the only question I had about the Shack was why did it appear more cramped than 43 years ago, perhaps nothing to do with my weight!
There were a few examples of cockpit sections in situ, if anyone is in the area next weekend pay Newark a visit if you haven’t been before you might just be more than a little surprised, after all we owe it to them in preserving part of OUR aviation heritage. 😮

As far as I know Lee it’s a pukka F.1A Lightning (XM191) but it’s now been painted up as a 5 Squadron F.6 and used by the RAF’s exhibition contractors as a recruiting aid. Not exactly representative of the aircraft you’d find if you did join up, but beautifully restored and presented all the same!

Thanks for the info on this exhibit Mark, does that mean it wasnt a real active airframe

The RAF Inspectorate of Recruiting’s Lightning F.1A XM191 masquerading as an F.6.
It was at Cockpitfest last year too. Very nice.
