Lots of action at EDI today

Well myself and Matthew went to EDI today to see what movements there were. We knew that was an airsow of 15 miles away and knew that EDI will likely be a base for any aircaft involved. We were not disapointed.

First, we were treated to an RAF Jaguar and its ear splitting afterburner take off. Followed shortly by a PBY Catalina seaplane, complete with original radial piston engines!
Then we watched 2 vintage jets take off, one of them being a Sabre

We thought that was our lot untill a little boy started shouting “Red Arrows, Red Arrows” and sure enough, spit into 2 arrow formations the Red arrow Hawker jets blistered along the ILS path for runway 24 and commenced a spectacular flyby. Jjust as they passedt the middle of runway 24 the lead plane broke formation bit climbing steeply up and turning sharply to the right, followed one by one in military fashion by the rest. they circled round and landed, one by one. The all gathered at the turn off and taxied in a 2 by 2 formation. As they did so, a Spitfire (to far and fast to make out the model) took off and headed for the airshow.

We were on a high after watching the red arrows. The crowd that had gathered also enjoyed it. There were a lot of people there, I’d say 30 or 40. much more than the usualy trickle of 4 or 5 passers by.

We then watched as the EDI airport Fire service was scrambled and took up positions at each runway turnoff. We then heard from fellow spotters who had scanners that a KLM 737 that had taken off 10 mins prior was making a return with engine problems. We saw an Air Europa 737 circle in a holding pattern over head, joined shortly my a Scotairways Dornier 328.

We watched with bate breath as the 737 approached and landed, seemingly normal. As it slowed and taxied in the fire service followed closely.

The vintage jets and the PBY Catalina returned during the day, the jets taking off a second time, including the RED BULL DeHavilland Vampire. Man she was loud. An RAF tornado also took off and returned.

Thought you all might like to know 😉

“RAF Jaguar and its ear splitting afterburner take off” – hehehe! Amuses me everytime when I hear people on this civvy bit talking about fast jets! That’s nothing! You want to spend a day at Cottesmore or Coltishall – standing 50-60 feet away from them on full power, or go to a show and hear a B-1B depart.

BTW – the Red Arrows fly BAe Hawks, not “Hawkers”. :p

BAe Hawks… of course…. I knew that… typo gremlin!

The Air Europa was circling over my house virtually! It passed 3 or 4 times.
It was very unusual so I knew something wasn’t quite right.
