Lough Foyle Corsair(Really old thread 2003!!)

Hi folks,
Does anyone know how much is left of the Corsair at the bottom of Lough Foyle in Northern Ireland? According to W&R it’s Corsair II JT693 ‘R’ of 1837Sqn FAA. How did it end up in the lough and would what’s left be worth recovering at all??

As anyone found any of these wrecks on Google Earth?

Yes, go out from the runway over the water and you can see the wings of the firefly?

David, I’m assuming you meant to type 54 rather than 44 in the date 🙂 Thanks for identifying it.

The Firefly is AS.6 WB378 which spun in on approach to Eglinton 3/12/44 -no identity is given for the unknown Corsair. For reference December 1982 FlyPast
page 27 gives some good pictures of all three wrecks.

I should have mentioned that the last photo shows the other Corsair, in case anyone was wondering!

Great pics AT.. thanks for posting. Judging by the fuselage alot of the airframe has been cut and hacked off over the years by souvenir hunters as well as mother nature.

There are two Corsair wrecks as well as a Firefly. I took these photos in 1963 or 64 and JT693 was in a poor state then. The other Corsair is too far out and not accessible on foot. The Firefly, I believe, crashed rather than ditched so it is badly broken up.

There are two Corsair wrecks -from memory FlyPast covered them both circa late 1982 in two issues. One has engine -one hasn’t.

Reading PPrune it appears there are at least 2 wrecks a Firefly and the Corsair.. Anyone have an Id for the Firefly? I think they are getting mixed up!

another one

my photo is of one that is a few yards from the sea wall at Ballykelly. From memory maybe of the end of the North South runway? It is not the one near Eglington.Looked on Google and at 55degs 04mins North 7degs 00mins West there is an object showing in the mud.We walked down the road next to the airfield and turned right along the sea wall and it was there in the mud.Are there two known wrecks there?

found my corsair photo

These not very clear photos show the RN Corsair on the mud near Ballykelly as it was in 1960!!Every thing that could be removed had,we were so dissapointed! The wings are buried in the mud with just the tips protruding and the engine is detached from the fuselage.Wonder if its still there?

And speaking of Lough Foyle, are the substantial Firefly remains still sitting in the water off Eglinton (or should that be Derry International Airport or whatever they call it these days?).
I last saw them in the late 80s, probably the remains of at least two aircraft just to the east of the airfield, clearly visible from the air at low tide.
