Low-Cost between London-Hong Kong

OASIS Hong Kong Airlines Ltd, the city’s first low-fare carrier, won licenses to operate flights to London, Chicago and other routes, becoming the second Asian discount carrier to announce plans to fly to the United States and Europe.
Oasis will firm up plans to lease Boeing 747-400 aircraft after Hong Kong’s Air Transport Licensing Authority approved its application for the routes, Chief Executive Steve Miller said yesterday. The airline plans to start flights to London’s Gatwick Airport in June 2006, he said.

Could be quite interesting. It’ll be interesting how it fairs if it happens.

Any idea who was the former operator of these 2 birds?

It seems a slight change now – but I can give you the latest update:

The two a/c coming are 747-400s, TF-AMA and TF-AMB. Both of which are being leased from Air Atlanta.
TF-AMA is already in Singapore (apparently) for a refit.
They were previously operated by Iberia.

The real problem with low-fare ops on LON-HKG is the sector times – 12 hours or more each way, plus turn times, means its not possible to do a daily op with one aeroplane. Operating at the same time each day (or every other day, or whatever) means quite a bit of aircraft downtime between flights which wrecks utilisation – this is one of the reasons why Cathay operate 747-400s to places like BKK and TPE, as these short sectors fill in the otherwise unproductive time between longhaul ops. It will be interesting to see whether this upstart can find other shorter haul work to bring its aircraft utilisation up to meaningful levels.

Cathay, Virgin, BA and Qantas all operating to London from HKG, to much competition on that route. Any one of these airlines could price Oasis out of the game.

I think the distance HKG-London is not suitable for “low-costy” carrier. Or, if you do it there will be only monir difference to existing airlines and people will at best have the perception of flying low-cost.

Neither can I but then TOM from Gatwick-Perth in a 767-300 can hardly be a comfortable flight!

Try Gatwick-Sydney in an Airtours 763, which I did back in 1997!

I was thinking that as well Phil. I can’t imagine it being an all economy operation on a 12 hour flight – if it was it would have to be a good seat pitch e.g. 33″

It will be interesting to see how they configure the 747, in terms of Business/Economy as the HKG sector attracts high numbers of business class passengers. Will be good to get some more long-haul into LGW as well.
