I just found this photo of the Buchon making a low level pass at Breighton. Shades of Ray Hanna here…

“The Hurricane Got it” remark i find slightly misplace when you think what could have happened![/QUOTE]

It says that it was Taff Smith at the controls underneath.
IF its the end of the Flypast photo sortie (which I am led to believe it was) the Flypast photos clearly show Brian Brown flying it. Mind you, thats a big IF…..:D

I was at breighton a few years back when that flew it had engine trouble but prior to that was in a dogfight with the hurricane, then in the distance you could hear popping & on my scanner i heard taff say he had engine trouble, he did a flyby and you could see flames from the engine.
It did a fast circuit and came into land very quickly engine shut down as soon as it landed & fire crew came out with extinguishers!
The hurricane got it!
I belive that was the display for Taffs 60th birthday, and that Hurricane was a Spitfire MH434 flown by Nigel Lamb.
A very tense few minutes was had by those on the ground while taff tried to get the Buchon down safely.
It was a carburator problem that caused fuel to pour into the engine cowling and not allow the engine to either idle or open up correctly.

The guys you can see in the picture are the engineers and owner. I have copies of the photos taken by the engineer on the left (about a second before the above shot…………….. :D. I believe the pilot is the late Mr. Brown.
The picture above appeared in Flypast a few years ago.

Perhaps I should not ask but just how legal is that? – not so much the low flying but more the photographers being there?
Is there a law for flypast height? 😉
Seriously, it all depends on the ATC folks. It’s something that you usually see in small aerodromes, where you’ll probably be asked to do it. I heard though that some years ago the Heathrow ATC requested some passing by Spits to delight them with a low pass on one of their runways, which the pilots obliged without a second word :p

Having only seen a Buchon in action twice (and both times with Mark Hanna at the helm), I’d have nothing else to base a comparison on.
But what a display! I just wish I could find the old East Fortune 1998 video…
