Lowestoft Air Show July 2005

Just a reminder that towards the end of the month of July there is one of the best free air shows in the country at Lowestoft.

A few details here at the moment, http://www.lowestoftairfestival.co.uk/gallery_misc.asp if it rains (like the thunderstorms I have encountered on occasions) there is always the leaky pier to shelter under!

As you face East the sun is away from you so photography is good but please be aware of the hundreds of thousands of people who congregate for this annual event (the last one?) and the traffic problems this brings.

A good vantage point is on the cliffs at the Pakefield end of the promenade.

Haha, yes I swam near there once. Beautifully warm – just like being on holiday. There is some free parking available not far from mine, not sure if it’ll be full or not, but we can find somewhere I’m sure. I’l be local butchering ad greengrocering too. Probably do some beef kebabs – you know, with pepper, onion and cherries.

Funny you should mention that we thought we just might. How much you charging for the parking ??

I’ll bring some real food from the local butchers mind.

And some local trivia, went swimming at Sizewell last night, scary how the power station warms the water innit?

I won’t be there this year but I wish I was going, can’t get accomodation. Had a good time there last year.

You never know, if the weathers any good I may go for one day.

Don’t have to go to the pier for that Chris.

Here, are you and fred going to join us? You’re welcome to have some grub afterwards.

I’m heading down on the friday with my little girl and Steve and his son. Eloise hasn’t been to a show before but loves the beach, so it’s Ice cream and paddling with a/c in the background followed by a bbq. It’s alright as a good show, and Bruno Peek (of the Millenium Beacons and Trafalgar celebrations) is involved this time so it may be better than previous shows. If the weather is crap I’ll watch from my garden. Or I may go liveside if my mate takes his boat out….

The Claremont pier is closed as always, but it is up for sale so perhaps in a few years it may be a possible. South pier (the concrete one where i go prawning and catch lobsters) is usually closed as they stick fireworks on in the evening. Just have fun and make a donation please – you’re paying to keep it going, and to stop my council tax increasing.

The Claremont pier has no public access beyond the amusement arcade anyway as the wooden floor is in poor condition( unless its been restored).

Neal

That probably explains how I got soaking wet from sheltering under the pier when the BBMF display was delayed during a thunderstorm!

A good vantage point for you photogs is on the cliffs at the Kirkley end of Pakefield Cliffs, bring back some good ‘uns. 😀

This will be the place to be, as the whole airshow has been “Moved-Along” slightly this year.
This is due to the newly erected 100 “odd” mtr high wind turbine at Ness Point interfering with the flying line. 😮

The concrete pier (harbour entrance) usually has people on the pier head, the Claremont Pier (Wooden structure) has been closed to the public in the past few years at air shows, except the amusement arcade area adjacent to the promenade. Bathers are not encouraged more than a few yards into the water (Recall the Harrier incident taking a plunge in the shallows!)

The weather can always make or break any event, I have been to L’oft Air Show on very hot days and where thunderstorms have broken out on others. Bearing in mind low cloud cover and thunderstorms I have found the organisers do an excellent job in rescheduling flybys, I have found the tannoy system first class (Tornado demo an exception!) and too the continuity of displays.

For those that travel by train the rail station is very close to the harbour and bridge. For those coming by car then either get there very early or use the park and ride system. Remember that this event attracts huge crowds and its free once on the sea front.

I’ve only been once and that was last year and it was a scorcher of a day.

Is it the flying display itself that you think is badly organised? The display director is very experienced and has run many airshows.

Neal

Well, to be fair, every time I’ve been the weather was awful, so a lot of aircraft never arrived.

I think you can guarantee that the CAA have passed their beady eye over the earlier shows and approved them as safe.

Never been was think of going this year utill I saw the proce of the train from Southend £48!

Do the aircraft fly over the pier or past the pier head?

if the pier is open to the public and the aircraft pass over it then the show could be in trubble as the displaying aircraft must remain a set distance from any structure or person

Aircraft operating a less than 100kts

Fly past 50 meters
Aerobatics 100 meters
V/stol 150 meters

Aircraft operating between 100 – 200 kts
Fly past 100 meters
Aerobatics 150 Meters
V/stol 150 Meters

Aircraft operating Between 200-300 Kts
Fly past 150 Meters
Aerobatics 200 Meters
V/Stol150 Meters

Aircrat operating over 300 kts
Fly past 200 Meters
Aerobatics 230 Meters
V/Stol 150 Meters

Then addon the length of the pier which is 720ft or 218meters.

As I said above if they pass over the pier during thier display slots and people are on it then the show would infringe the safey regulations set down by the CAA.

I’ve been three times….not bothering this year.

Too many people as its a freebie, (Although Pakefield Cliffs not usually too bad).

Very badly organised display.

Its pi**** down every time I’ve been

You would think the organisers would be more organised when its for nothing wouldn’t you

Does anybody have any further information about this airshow as their official website is still rather out of date.

Weather doesn’t look too promising at the moment, still worth a visit?
