Lowestoft by the Sea – 23Jul09

Long time since I’ve been to the sea side and as far as I’m aware, I’ve never been to a sea side air show before so on Thursday I made the train journey to Lowestoft. I was not sure what to expect but was impressed with the organisation and lay out. Along with a £2 donation I also bought a programme and a hat. I found a spot at display centre, above the parachute drop zone, and next to a rather large orange panel pegged out on the grass bank. Some of the displays were a bit far out but flying was impressive non the less. I thought the Vulcan was a bit pedestrian in its display and I’m not a big fan of fast jets but was well impressed with the Dutch F-16 and especially its colour scheme. I left early, as the Sea King began its run in on the Life Boat before departing on its call out, as from behind I could see the storm clouds gathering and it chucked it down half way to Norwich and the through trains from Norwich to Peterborough were few and far between.

Used my Tamron 200-500mm zoom but even that was not long enough for some of the routines and I’ve cropped heavily on some of these, and I’d forgotten that it needed bright sunlight for decent photos.

Great photos, I’ve only been to Lowestoft oncein 2003 and I remember the flying being quite far out.

I really like the lighting on the Skyraider

Lovely pictures Pen – Pusher.

Better weather on the Thursday than the day I visited, Friday!

It absolutely lashed it down, thunder too but before all that the bad weather came the display was very good.

I would normally prefer the warbirds but the paraffin burners did a good show, the Alpha jet was a good display dodging in and out of the black clouds and the Reds had some different moves since I last saw them too.

F16 was awesome and with flaires too, it displayed at the northern end for some reason. I was on the way back to the car as I was drenched so we had a good display.

I think the Army should get a ticking off for flying the Union Flag upside down.
The broad white cross should be top most and flying from the pole.
They did do well to jump on Friday, hat’s off the them all.

Roll on next year if it goes ahead with better weather too.

Well done to all.

Brian.

Knowing the circumstances, I think that you’ve done a good job.
