Lucky find inside a book today!

Hi All;

Recently, I picked up some second hand books to sell on to hopefully make a few quid in these difficult times (just been made redundant as mentioned in another thread!)

This book caught my eye as it was clearly a German publication of wartime vintage or there abouts…

A quick translation of the cover revealed, albeit a bit obviously, that it was titled Manfred von Richthofen: A Military Legacy. It was published in 1938 for the Military Science Department of the Luftwaffe and inside, it bears an official stamp that says Library Officer of what appears to be Liv.Gr.Kdo.3. I’m not sure what the Liv bit stands for, but did grasp the part about Gr.Kdo.3
meaning Gruppe Kommando 3.

However, tucked inside the book was a card that looks like this;

I’m not sure who S R Dawson was, but Major Blake was the C/O of 3 Squadron at the time of the Red Baron’s shooting down. It seems that Blake was responsible for the crash site and Manfred von Richthofen’s body after recovery from the crash.

I was a little stunned to say the least to be holding a piece of that infamous red Triplane in my hands, and wonder if anyone here may be able to throw some more light on this relic, and also the book, which appears to be very interesting in it’s own right.

I’ll be honest though, these items were bought to sell on, although I was unaware of this little find amongst what I bought. I wonder what these items might be worth!

It’s not very often that stuff like this happens to me!! 😀
