Yes and they had to shell out extra at A340 infrastructure, engineers etc.

was said to be due to low satisfaction from passengers, also the aircraft just didnt suit there fleet structure. BTW it was refering to SIA.

SIA, afterall, being an economically challenged airline, didn’t have enough cashflow to buy brand new 777’s, needed to trade in older aircraft in order to finance the deal.

I think SIA ditched their A340’s because Boeing took them in as trade-in against 777’s.

I couldn’t see why SIA got rid of their A340’s, either. Theirs were pretty much the same age as SIA’s, yet they ditched them in favor of 777’s, where they could have easily augmented each other in their fleet, in my opinion. Especially in terms of quasi-fleet commonality, with them taking delivery of A340-500’s, in the near future.

The only reason I can think of for the bare metal respray is to minimise weight bearing in mind it is a low powered aircraft about to be operated from the hot and high Jo’burg airport.

yeah, it maybe a similar lease to SAA as bmi’s lease of their A330’s to SAA…

Can’t see that LH would want to get rid of their 340’s, they’re only ten odd years old, and LH have never been keen on operating ETOPS across the pond (Except for Privatair’s BBJ from DUE to EWR… Incidentally, this service is soon to be operated by a Privatair ACJ)

I’d heard that LH is just rolling over the 340 fleet to newer versions-thats all.

They could get rid of the older ones, to incorporate newer models. Other option is a wet lease to SAA.

Why has that 340 been stripped back down to the bare metal fuselage?
