Lufthansa to launch budget airline through Eurowings:
Lufthansa AG has decided to launch a budget airline through its affiliate Eurowings, Focus magazine reported, without citing sources.
The magazine said the budget flights will start to Europe from the western state of North Rhine Westphalia. Internal German flights will then be launched as a second step.
According to the magazine, the project is a very sensitive topic internally, as Lufthansa is worried launching a low cost airline would anger its own pilots.
Lufthansa currently holds a blocking minority of 24.9% in Eurowings.

It seems fairly risky, with the Lufthansa cost base being pretty high, but I guess they have taken an “if you cant beat them join them approach”.
The abillity of a traditional network operator to also operate in the point to point low-cost market still remains to be seen, however. Maybe they have taken a look at the BA/Go plan and figured out how to make it work better?

Doesn’t Buzz (owned by KLM I think) operate internal low cost flights within France?

I was going to say the same. The German markets has always been too expensive for no reason. It´s time to end with monopolies. Some markets need that as well. In France and Spain would be great to have budget airlines.
