Lufthansa will order 30 E-190's & 15 CRJ900's!

Nice order for Embraer and Bombardier.
A new order for the CRJ-900 was to be expected but E-190’s was no exactly what I had in mind. I thought, they might buy the CRJ-1000.

Ohh, just noticed this, an older Swiss International Air Lines order:

São José dos Campos, April 17, 2007 – Embraer confirms that it has entered into a
preliminary agreement with Deutsche Lufthansa AG for supplying 30 EMBRAER 190
jets, with deliveries starting in 2009.
The execution of the final contract is expected within the next few weeks. Once
confirmed, this contract will supersede the existing agreement between Embraer and
Swiss International Air Lines for 15 EMBRAER 170s and 15 EMBRAER 195s, and it
does not substantially alter Embraer’s existing firm backlog.

New aircraft for Lufthansa regional fleet
Supervisory Board approves order for 45 new jets

17.04.07
At its meeting today, the Lufthansa Supervisory Board approved an order for 45 short-range aircraft. From the end of 2008, Lufthansa will thus take delivery of 30 regional jets of the Embraer 190 family and 15 regional jets of the Bombardier CRJ900 family.

The new aircraft will become part of the modern and efficient regional fleet that Lufthansa deploys on its European routes and for feeder flights. This enables the airline to connect further regions with Lufthansa’s global route network via its hubs and gives Lufthansa customers access to 192 destinations in 78 countries worldwide. Operating an attractive and competitive regional fleet will enable Lufthansa to maintain growth, grasp opportunities and create new perspectives for its employees.

The aircraft order marks a further milestone in the ongoing modernisation and expansion of the Lufthansa fleet. The Embraer 190 family can accommodate about 100 passengers, while the Bombardier CRJ900 family has about 90 seats. Both jet families are highly fuel efficient with a consumption of less than four litres to carry one passenger at a distance of 100 kilometers and have low noise and emission levels. This puts them at the forefront in terms of environmental compatibility and ecological efficiency.

Lufthansa’s regional fleet currently comprises 145 aircraft, including twelve jets of the CRJ900 family. Lufthansa was the first airline that deployed jets on its regional routes. Now Lufthansa is assuming again the leadership in fleet modernisation.

Regional Jets

Those little E jets are becoming quite popular right ’round the globe

Having made a few flights with Flybe on the Embraer 195 I can understand the increase in popularity, they are very comfortable, seats are bigger than normal cattle class, they are very quite, and also fuel efficient.
