I have begun re-reading the excellent book Battle of Britain by Leonard Mosley, about the making of the epic film Battle of Britain.
I was wondering, were any members of the forum present at Duxford on the 14th of May 1968 when the ‘Luftwaffe’ forces arrived from Spain? Or were you perhaps in Cambridge that day, when they apparently did a low level beat up over the city?
It must have been something quite awesome and astounding to see all those Messerschmitts and the two Heinkels flying over England, especially if you were unaware of the film being made.
Has anyone got photos of the arrival? The book says press and others were gathered at Duxford, so I wondered…

That ‘replica’ needs to be comprehensively blown-up, regardless of any movie!
It looks as though it is melting.

I’ll have a poke around and see what I can come up with – those two just happened to be at the top of the pile so to speak!

Jumped over the fence by the “Chateau” and ran in to take a few pictures in the “dispersal” area.
Nobody about … happy days!

I was 8yo & on vacation at my grandparents in Walton on Naze. Sat on breakwater one day doing spot of crabbing & some bloke walks over & starts talking to me about what i’m doing. Eagle eye mother on beach gets a bit concerned & comes to see whats going on. They get chatting & then he introduced himself at Guy Hamilton…

You have to put this in a 1968 communications context. Mid twenties, first son just born, heavily mortgaged, Harold Wilson’s pay freeze, photo-copiers not in general use, pre fax. I don’t think we could even run to having a telephone at home.
That would be the wonderful Britain that was that the UKIP etc. hark back to. 😉

Nah, 1967 he’d have been too busy preparing for his retirement party.

Wow, excellent cuttings, thanks Mark. Were you actually there for the arrival too? I’m sure you’d have been involved somewhere along the line, weren’t you?

I did visit the film sets including Duxford but my main interest, leading up to the filming, was the engineering activity at RAF Henlow preparing the Spitfires for flying, taxi or static duty. I would visit every two or three weeks to monitor the new arrivals and confirm or change established RAF identities with this unique opportunity to inspect the aircraft in a dismantled state.

There’ll be Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover…
…sang Vera Lynn.
This isn’t quite what she had in mind.
Most of the UK Press for 16 May 1968 went with the ‘White Cliffs’ theme.
I think the Luftwaffe were already in Spain. It just took a large paint brush etc.

Yes, aged 8. The Cambridge bit is a bit embellished in the book. But 17 bouchons, b25, and I think it was only one heinkil initially did it for me. Few of the spits came in as well as far as I remember.
