Luftwaffe Typhoon Crash, 1944

While searching for something else, I found reference to the crash of a Typhoon Ib, T9+GK, operated by Versuchstaffel 2./Versuchverband OKL. The crash is noted as having occured on “28 July, 1944 near Meckelfeld, 5 km SE of Harburg, S of Hamburg.” The pilot, Fw Herbert Gold, was killed in the crash.

Does anyone have the pre-Luftwaffe history for the Tiffie?

Regards,

Jan

Hi All,
discussed in the link below and on the old LEMB before the old website crash.

The conclusion was it was Wn 0548 , ex JP548,

“Barn door” Typhoon?! New one on me but I suppose it was a bit of a barn door. Perhaps ‘car door’? which seems to have been adopted as the way of describing Typhoons fitted with the original canopy design. Anyway ‘T9-GK’ was EJ956 ex SA-I of 486 Squadron, not JP548 which was indeed the ex 174 Squadron aircraft which crashed on 29 July 1944.

EJ956 SA-I had been shot down by flak on a Rhubarb and force-landed at Cany-Barville on 24 March 1943. Flt Sgt Bill Mawson was captured the next day.

While I know Wikipedia isn’t always trustworthy, I found this;

“On 14 February 1944, another Typhoon was captured and later flown in Zirkus Rosarius. JP548 of 174 Sqn., force landed after engine failure near Marigny, France – the pilot, F/O Proddow evaded capture. This Typhoon crashed at Reinsehlen on 29 July 1944, killing Feldwebel Gold.”

There is a picture of a barn door Typhoon with serial ??358 or ??558 on the web site prehaps that one can be identified based on the partial serial

which would be within: And MUST be a Barn Door version
