Lurgashall crash

Dear All,

Long shot this.

Some years ago I was following a lead on a (presumably) wartime aircraft crash at Lurgashall Mill Pond, near Petworth in Sussex.

Despite some initial clues, the trail went dry, or to be more accurate, people that might have known anything became very very cagey.

I have contacted the farmer and land owner but distinct reluctance to converse on the subject is apparent.

I am aware that a Stirling and a Spitfire crashed nearby at Gatehouse Farm, but I believe these are separate issues.

Anyone know anything more? Wild goose chase maybe?

Thanks.

Tim.

That is a regular story, Martin, but sadly without foundation.

The Lurgashall Stirling site would probably still yield some interesting items for you. PM me if interested in pursuing it.

There is a PDF file from the Harringtonmuseum.org which I cannot open describing a crash to R9313 of 218 Sqn. Google on Lurgashall plane crash should bring it up.

Hi M
That is the Gatehouse Stirling ‘Friendly Fire’ incident.

Hi Timwing
It might be worth PM ing Andy Saunders as he has written a few books on wartime crash sites

cheers baz
