Luton 14.2.08 With a D300

Recently got a bit fed up with blurry/out-of-focus crap that was coming out of my 400D (although it’s the lens that’s the problem), so for my most recent trip I borrwed my Dad’s D300. Have to admit, it lived up to my expectations and produced far better results than my faulty Canon equipment.

Anyway, on with the photos.

First, a spell at the bridge.

Then as the Air Slovakia (with a Bellview Logo, operating for Sky Europe.) taxied out so I headed over to the car park to catch it’s line-up and got a bonus with this beautiful old falcon.

The high cloud that was predicted to arrive sometime after 17:00 arrived early, so I made my back to the terminal to catch the Transavia and Air Bulgaria (also oping for Sky Europe) being pushed back.

Then, just as I was about to pack my bags, a friendly spotter gave me the heads up that a Chinese 318CJ (Well, he called it a BBJ…. 😀 ) was parked round the back in an uncluttered position (Rare!). So walked round to get a shot of it before heading home to watch the Rugby.

Turns out that not turning up until 1PM meant I missed a Hello MD-90, an ATP and an ex-EasyJet SunCountry 737 departing for Lasham. And also a Tu154 (possibly my favourite aircraft that I’ve never seen.) flight due in when I would’ve been there was cancelled. Otherwise, a good day movements wise. 😀

As always, your comments and criticisms are welcome! I would especially like to know if you can see a visible difference from my 400D shots.
Might not be easy to see from these 800x shots, if so it might be best checking JP towards the end of the week for the 1024x size shots. I personally think the German challenger looks much better at 1024x.

Thanks for looking,

Dan.

Interesting stuff.

There was a fuel bowser in the way when I went round to get a shot of the Chinese A318 yesterday. 🙁

Also it was raining, but that goes without saying…..

I used to have a Sigma 18-200 and it was crap, Mr N! :p

the Sigma 18-200 DC OS. I would advise you to stay away from it

Nonsense, Dan! Crap lenses don’t really exist. Just inappropriate lenses, faulty lenses and lack of knowledge/ability on the part of the photographer.

A good set all in all, although the odd one or two could (to my eyes) do with balancing up compositionally. Particularly the ones cropped to the horizontal stabiliser so the fuselage is way off centre. Just an opinion though, of course!

There’s also a bit of overexposure in a few, but nothing that can’t be sorted by not cranking the contrast/levels up as much.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

Tom, the lens I use with my 400D is the Sigma 18-200 DC OS. I would advise you to stay away from it, but I’m preety sure mines just a duff lens (probably sorted with a bit of calibration when I can get round to it) I used the non OS version with the D300 and the shots don’t have the same blur problem.

Nice shots again, Dan. I’ll leave any suggestions to those with more experience and expertise than me. 🙂

What lens do/did you normally use on your 400D, if you don’t mind me asking? It’s just that I’m thinking of making a re-appearance at some airports with my equipment soon and am contemplating getting some new gear – obviously want to make sure I make the right decisions etc..
