[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-11-02 AT 10:57 AM (GMT)]A Fokker turboprop plane has crashed in thick fog near Luxembourg airport as it was coming in to land.
The Luxair plane – Flight LG9642/LH2420 – was reported to be carrying at least 19 crew and passengers en route from Berlin.
The number of casualties is not yet known and the airport has been closed, a Luxair spokesman told BBC News Online.
A Luxembourg Government spokesman, Guy Schuller, said at least 10 people were dead.
The plane crashed after 1000 (0900 GMT ) in Niederanven, a few kilometres outside the capital’s Findel airport, the Associated Press reported, quoting local media.
Rescuers have rushed to the crash site – an area of gently rolling wooded hills and farmland.
More soon.

RE: Luxair Fokker 50 crashes in Fog
Last news tell that the pilot was crying as he was being rescued that both engines failed. There´s a big groove on the land indicating that the undercarriage hadn´t been deployed yet and touched with the fuselage first. Most victims, died due to the impact. Remember that F50 has an upper wing position, and nothing under the passengers feet just a thin layer of aluminium. Other sources indicate a flock of birds. That´s is a bit stupid since birds don´t fly in foggy days. So….really confusing now.

RE: Luxair Fokker 50 crashes in Fog
Airport is a CATII. So it´s pretty hard trying to be landing in that weather conditions. I think is a clear CFIT, no emergency calls given, so normal descend. A faulty altimeter data?. What´s odd is that ATC hadn´t told the crew they were flying too low and that they weren´t alerted by the GWPS.

problems in the fuel lines….i dont think so. Most probably looks like pilot error.

RE: Luxair Fokker 50 crashes in Fog
Shocking – my thoughts to the victims and their families. Luxair had an exceptional safety record and the Fokker 50 is an extremely reliable type. I read that the aircraft involved had only been maintained the day before the crash, what could have gone wrong?[www.groups.yahoo.com/group/sabenabelgianairlines]

RE: Luxair Fokker 50 crashes in Fog
Just a thought, the damage to the props was minimal and no fire on impact—maybe a fuel problem.

RE: Luxair Fokker 50 crashes in Fog
Very sad news.
Perhaps it was just down to pilot error, especially with it being very foggy, mistakes are more likely to be made with such poor visibility.

Here is more of a full story, from Skynews.
10 DEAD IN PLANE CRASH
At least 10 people died when a passenger aircraft crashed while attempting to land in heavy fog at Luxembourg Airport.
The Luxair plane was carrying 19 passengers and three crew members, according to the Luxembourg Government.
The twin-engine Fokker 50 had been on a scheduled flight from Berlin’s Tempelhof airport and was making its final approach to land when it crashed around 10.15am (0915 GMT).
Luxembourg government spokesman Guy Schuller said the plane crashed three miles from the Grand Duchy’s international airport.
“Of the 19 passengers, there are reported to be seven or eight survivors,” Mr Schuller said.
The condition of the survivors was not immediately known.
A spokesman for Belgium’s defence ministry said Brussels had sent three helicopters to the site of the accident and put a military hospital on alert after neighbouring Luxembourg requested help.
Luxair said the plane had been in service since 1991.
“Luxair deeply regrets having to confirm that flight LG9642/LH2420 coming from Berlin-Tempelhof to Luxembourg was involved this morning in an accident at Niederanven,” the airline said in a statement.
All flights to and from Luxembourg have been either cancelled or re-routed through Brussells.
