Lydd Air Show 09-09-2006

A new venue for the airshow calender this year on the same weekend as another air show. A varied display but with limited RAF participation in the name of the Hawk only today.

The flying today was the best I have seen for a very long time and very varied with some of the classic jet heavies being putting through their paces in a way more reflected in service aircraft. Awsome.

I am unable to pick any faults with the flying display – they all looked good, the aerobatics and the warbirds. It was right in your face and never too far from the crowd.

All this for just £7.00 to get in!

The display takes place in one corner of the airfield with the runway at right angles to the display datum. I do not think there is good visiblity for the start of take off runs (coming from the right) but aircraft do come in to view at about lift of point or just after. The aircraft were also landing from the right today. Despite this, in general the layout of the datum worked well with the sun behind you.

I am not sure but it looks that the display datum may be outside the airfield itself but maybe owned by them. Your are looking in to what looks like an ordinary field. Perhaps someone could clarify.

The only problem was getting in! It was easy to drive in and park but you then had to join a very slow moving pedestrian que at the entrance to the show site enclosure.

Kent – The garden of England.

Lydd – the compost heap at the end of the garden! 😀

I always expect to see tumbleweed blowing across the airfield and doors banging in the breeze like some 1960s American road movie whenever I go there..

😀 😀 😀

I’m afraid Lydd is a bit like the forgotten city, it’s not the sort of place you go to unless necessary although, believe it or not, Dungeness is even more dire. The airfield used to be a bit more lively, I worked there 1979-1982 for Skyways who ran a freight-only service to Beauvais, Antewerp and Rotterdam. Dan-Air were also flying out of Lydd at the time, but they were on a rapid decline and went bust I think. Skyways went under too, I would never have left otherwise.

There has been talk recently about expanding the airport but it’s met with much resistance from the locals unfortunately.

I thought the airshow was great and I love your pix Semae, I hope it becomes a regular event.

Steph – not quite a Lyddite, but live 5m down the road 😀

Was the Coastguard Islander just there for the airshow do you know? Its normal based at Manston 🙂

James

It did not take part in the airshow and it was not on the list to display. It landed back later in the afternoon. I do not know why it was at Lydd. Perhaps it may have been for maintenance purposes but I speculate.

Interestingly, when I checked G-INFO I found out that the plane is on charter and is registered to Atlantic Transport Ltd at Coventry airport which came as a surprise to me.

Lydd always looks like it’s stuck in a late ‘fifties time warp

The Coastguard Islander was indeed G-BCEN.

Out of four displays by this Canberra I have seen this year, the one at Lydd is the best so far.

It looked like it had gone verticle but I think the angle of view from my position just gave a misleading impression. In reality it was probably more of a dumbell type climb with a wingover at the top. But a very good one one!

A few more pics including G-BCEN taking off just before the show.

No doubt about it, for one so big the Canberra is an agile old bird.

V.Good shots Martin, thanks for sharing ’em.

I love that place….. just wish it were a tad closer to me.

Last time I was there, we were on holiday (w/family staying at Camber Sands)
& I took my old V.6 ‘Granny’ Scorpio around the place with a moderately interested family aboard……

How times change, now the kids are teenagers, it’s all moans & groans any time I go near an Airfield……
hence why tomorrow, I’ll be going to the old Coastal Command base at Bircham Newton (Heritage Room) on me ‘Jack Jones’, with no family members to spoil the day.

Lydd always looks like it’s stuck in a late ‘fifties time warp – thats why it always conjures up Bristol 170 Superfreighters to me. 😎

Alas, on the few times I’ve been there, it’s as ‘dead as a Dodo’ flightwise.

Camber sands, now there is an exciting place. Had just over a fortnight working there a couple of months ago, the best thing apart from the beach was the road out of there. Nice pic’s looked like a good show.

Thank you. There did not appear to be much in the way of arrivals and departures. Based aircraft on Saturday consisted of a few Trislanders, a few GA and a Coastgaurd Islander but I believe the the airport want to expand their activities. It does look rather underused at the moment.

Hope you had a nice day at Birchum Newton.

The Coastgaurd Islander was it G-BCEN.
