Lydd and Manston Reports.

Hi all, back from the “refreshing” 4 days of sun, in Hastings.

http://www.lydd-airport.co.uk/images/airport_logo.gifhttp://www.lyddair.co.uk/images/top_header.jpg

On the Tuesday, I visited Lydd Airport. Situated off a small turning on one of the main roads on Romney Marsh… There is a sign though. Road leading up to the entrance is full of potholes and could do with a re-surfacing!

Entrance to the airport is very small, far from your LHR! :p As you go in on the left is the check-in/customs area… which consists of, an X-ray machine, check-in desk, information desk and the customs area.

To the right is a bar/restaurant, where you can sit and watch the planes from inside, or you can go outside and sit to watch them.

I visited at about 4:45pm, so much of the days traffic had ended, though the main and only carrier at Lydd, Lydd Air, had just the one flight that day, coming in at 5:00pm, coming from Le Touquet. I was expecting a Trislander, but instead, the flight arrived 10 minutes early, and was made using what looked like a Cessna 402B, which actually dissapointed me. Other than this, there were quite a mix of aircraft sitting on the tarmac, which I got snaps of (will have to wait a few days for these snaps).

Planes seen on the Tuesday include:

G-BIJX — LYDD AEROCLUB — Cessna 152
G-BVTO — LYDD AEROCLUB — PA.28 Cherokee
G-ICOM — LYDD AEROCLUB — Cessna 152
D-MWLH — PRIVATE — Aerotechnik EV97 Eurostar? (I think?)
G-BZAD — LYDD AEROCLUB — Cessna C172 Skyhawk
G-BTGW — PRIVATE — Cessna 152
G-AVIS — PRIVATE — Cessna F172H
G-CBSO — ARCHER ONE GROUP — Piper PA28-181 Archer II
G-AZVJ — PRIVATE — Unknown
G-ARYK — PRIVATE — Cessna 172

I went back the next day, got there around 4:30pm, and I saw the Lydd Air Trislander, first time I have seen this type of aircraft… I found it quite a nice sight… makes a change from seeing all the Jets. He came in from the North, rather than the south due to gusty winds. G-BEDP, landed dead on 5:00pm From Le Touquet. 6 people were on the flight. I got about 10 snaps of this particular aircraft.

Planes I saw on Wednesday:

G-AVNU — LYDD AEROCLUB — Piper PA-28 180 Cherokee
G-BHJU — PRIVATE — Piper PA28-161 Warrior
G-WIRE — NATIONAL GRID (electric company) — AS.355 Twin Squirrel
G-CCAV — ARCHER TWO GROUP — Piper PA28-181 Archer II
G-BEDP — LYDD AIR — Trislander
——————————————————————-

Today I went to London Manston. Very good on the whole. If you like Classic 747’s or DC-8, then this is the place for you!

Started off by having a nibble in the restaurant, which faces the airfield. Got a few snaps whilst there of:

9G-MKA — MK Airlines — DC-8-55F (Stored with one engine)

G-GAFX — AFX Cargo — B747-245F (Stored)

3D-ADV — African International Airways — DC-8-54F

TF-ABA — Air Atlanta Icelandic — B747-267B (Going through engine tests)

After taking these few shots, I went in one of the two museums at Manston, the first being the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum, which was free to look around and depicts the history of the Spitfires and Hurricanes that were used at Manston when it was an RAF base (up until 1999). Also the museum depicted history about two people who flew these particular aircraft. I got a snap of each aircraft.

TB752 — SPITFIRE
BN230 — HURRICANE

Site that you may of Interest on the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum: http://www.spitfire-museum.com
————————————————————————————

The second meseum I went in was the RAF Manston museum, Β£1 admision fee, which depicts the history of Manston Airport, right back to the days of the war. It was only up until 1999, that Manston was still used a an RAF base.

I got a few more shots of some aircraft in this museum:

XV352 — Bucaneer (nose section only)
WT205 — English Electric Canberra (nose section only)
WD616 — Meteor
WP772 — De Havilland Chipmunk (no propeller)
————————————————————————————

After this I went back outside and took a drive around to another car park, only to see two more 747 classics…:

TF-ARF — Air Atlanta Icelandic — B747-200 ( Parked away from the airport, under-going cleaning, inside and out, as well as a mojor checking of the aircraft)

G-BDXO — Ex BA — B747-236B (One of the Ex Ba birds wearing the Paithani livery, recently flown back from Mojave in the USA— was parked up with TF-ARF)
————————————————————————————

Then got a few more snaps, one of ZS-OZV — African International Airways — DC-8-54F (in afriqiyah website titles)

And of an MK Airlines B747-200 Landing, 9G-MKL.

Also I saw another DC-8, N812TC, parked up next to the cargo terminal, but it was falling to bits… it was supposed to go to MK Airlines at the begining of the year, but nothing materialised.

I still think that Manston has the potentcial to become a bigger airport than it is… there are no passenger flights out of that airport either I was told today, although there is a flying club there! lol.

Anyhow thats my report, I hope you liked reading it, sorry it was long, but I hope it was worth while me doing it! :p

Pictures to follow in about a weeks time… and theres quite a few!!!!!! πŸ˜€ New Camera! :p Remember? lol

Sunday Im off to Biggin Hill, I will post my pics from ther in the Flypast Forum for those who want to see them. I have seen on the South East BBC news that a Virgin A340-600 is to be attending the show? Hope so! πŸ™‚

Ah well cheers for reading all. πŸ™‚

Thanks. :):)

Pre 9/11 there were quite regular Summer flights from the US to Manston by chartered aircraft such as DC 10s. They brought tourists to join cruise ships at Dover. The aircraft would stop at the far end of the runway from the terminal. The passengers disembarked straight onto coaches with their luggage going on a truck. 9/11 ended that traffic. There is just one return flight in the summer on a Saturday to Jersey. Many of the freight flights when I was a regular there two years ago were cut flowers grown in Africa. The cargo was being unloaded before the pilots had got out of their seats!
Also the occasional ANT 124 inside of which an articulated truck could reverse!

I have said it before and I will say it again, I just do not see Manston as the success people would like it to be.

Yes I would like to see new development at Manston, but the options for them are really turning against them and the argument that Manston could become a principle European regional airport, will have to be revisited.

In recent months there is talk of landing and take-off slots becoming available at Gatwick and Heathrow because of proposed growth and the scaling down of airline operations in light of the downturn in aviation. The Aurigny purchase was a small example. Don’t be at all fooled, airlines intentions to operate out of Manston may sound good, but customers will seek those slots at the lucrative major London airports, not Manston in the end.

I know we have the success of low cost airlines, but even if airlines are interested in Manston, the proposed development is already significantly behind the owner’s very optimistic growth programme. Even in areas of aviation like business jets, Manston is losing out to become the premier business airport to Farnborough.

There is also the subject of the congested Southeast England skies, which could damage Manston’s attempts at becoming a larger airport due to longer flying times, slots etc. Okay it might be good for regional aircraft but does Kent need a new regional airport? No. It would also be unlikely to generate the optimistic passenger figures.

Then the major problem-the infrastructure. No rail link and poor roads means potential business travellers will choose an airport like LCY.

But it can also handle huge planes to… based on what I saw yesterday, I dont think many small aircraft operate there ever. All DC-8’s and 747’s.

I think Manston would be a good airport for connecting Kent to the rest of the UK, as well as connecting the south of the UK to Scandinavia/Belgium and possibly France.

Its a shame that Mama Air never got going, they were to be based at Manston.

Here you go Martin, have a read of my Manston report that I did at the begining of the year.

I’d have to agree with you A330, I think Manston would make a great LoCo hub, it already has the facilities in terms of that huge runway.

Hi Martin, I was the one on here a while back who got rather Hyped about Manston. I still think this aircraft has a massive potencial to become a player alongside Stanstead and Luton.

For Lydd, I would say to start or allow any comercial airline using bigger planes than the props that are currently used would be a bit awkward, seeing as the airport is so tiny.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to start full comercial operations from either of these airports. I know Manston has been hyped up many a time as a good location for a new hub but I haven’t seen anything recently.

Hi Saab, I picked up a price list for the different flights you can do with Lydd Air, the only price it doesn’t seem to give is the normal Le Touquet flights???

Anyhow for Β£39, you can “Lunch Fly ‘n’ Dine” — Flights operate on Saturdays and Sundays, around the Lunch time hour. You are given a personal Captains Briefing, and then a 10-15 minute flight, then back to the Biggles Bar in the airport for lunch.

The other is “Dinner Fly ‘n’ Dine” for Β£59. Flights operate on Saturday evenings. You are greeted with Champagne on arrival. You are then given a briefing by the Captain, and the you board for a low level flight over the surrounding areas. After it is back to Lydd for a slap up 5 course meal in the Bigglrs Bar.

Not bad deals really, both are something different to do, rather than flying on the jets. πŸ™‚

Also you can charter your own Lydd Air Aircraft! Β£1,200 if you want to charter it to Le Touquet, Β£1,600 to Ostend, Β£1,800 to Antwerp, Β£1,900 to Paris and Β£2,200 to Amsterdam.

Again not really that bad a deal.

Anyhow, EGNM and Saab, cheers for the feedback. πŸ™‚

I think Lydd Air were in the process of receiving a Shorts 330 for flights to Beauvais and the Channel Islands.
At least you got to saw the Trislander πŸ™‚ Mighty good looking aircraft and fun to fly. G-BEDP used to be with Sky Trek the former Lydd operator who ceased operations.

good stuff andrew – i’ve passed Lydd before – we used to have a share in a holiday home in Romney!

Nice to see the 2 Atlanta B742s in the report. I’d like to point out these a/c are now actually OWNED by ABD as opposed to leased, they bought both these and 4 more last month. Unfortunatly my bird, TF-ATE has gone out into the desert – ABD Crew say this may be her final resting place πŸ™

Also good to here about two lessor mentioned airfields – London Lydd and London Manston. I wonder when London Leeds and London teeside will appear!!!
