Lydd Passenger Jet Trial

On Saturday 24th, my local airport (Lydd – London Ashford Airport) chartered a Boeing 737-300 for take off and landing trials, to test the airport facilities. Lydd is planning a major expansion at the moment including a runway extension and the building of a new terminal. I would like to know if anyone went to see theses trials as I couldn’t and if they have any picutres they are willing to show.

There is some more info about the development at http://www.lydd-airport.co.uk and some models showing the proposed terminal at http://www.f-l-a-g.co.uk

Manston would be better, I agree. But the airport has virtually no public transport links to anywhere. It would need to upgrade it’s facilities a lot more to make it viable. Ten minutes to Ramsgate is by car, or two or three hours on foot!

Bri:rolleyes:

I think if passager services did start there would be a bus link;) Plus Cityhopper would be ok at Lydd for LYD-AMS

Does anyone know if there will be an airshow again this year at Lydd and if so what aircraft will be participating. Last years airshow was pretty good considering it was a first for the airport (and things can only get better!).

Yeah there is another airshow this year.

most don’t know a thing about the UK other than it includes London and Scotland.

…..and for a lot of foreigners, Scotland is somewhere “in” England

MSE?

I think including London in an airport name is there for overseas visitors, not us lot – most don’t know a thing about the UK other than it includes London and Scotland.

Think that be good for Cityhopper to do that route with a F50.

James

That would be an interesting proposal, Id have thought it should prove popular, They fly AMS-HUY, which I would have thought was a similar type of route, not a large city, but does well none the less.

I guess a MSE-AMS would also be good, and maybe a better choice of departure point, with a greater population base nearby.

I have a soft spot for Lydd, coming from Kent when I was a lad, its was the only airport which had any commercial operations in the county. What would be useful would be a link to Amstedam so less people need to drive up to Gatwick, Stansted or Heathrow. Transfer in Amsterdam instead, especially for long haul, when you need two days check-in these days !!! I guess a MSE-AMS would also be good, and maybe a better choice of departure point, with a greater population base nearby.

, MSE can already handle 747’s and soon be capable of handling A380’s due to its long runway and large freight/cargo handling terminal…and seeings as MSE is closer to several major towns (Margate, Ramsgate) and cities (Canterbury, Rochester) within Kent, I think it will be more popular for tourists. Apparently, don;t know if it is still true or not, but Ramsgate, a town about 10 minutes from MSE, is very popular with US visitors, as they see it as ‘the gateway to Europe!”

The Cargo ramp is set to be made bigger to carry 2 747 and 1 A300F and that they can move without moving another aircraft if you understand me. DAS can now fly back into europe so hope they do some more out off MSE:D Anyway back to lydd I think the only airline to fly out off lydd is well Lyddair 😀 http://www.lyddair.com/

For those that have criticised the naming of London Ashford, my question to you is…So why is Gatwick called a London airport then??? It is still a good number of miles out of the capital isnt it…so the transport links there and back maybe slightly better, but as Lydd develops, so will the transport infrastructure to and from the airport. In fact a feasability study is currently ongoing to see about the re-opening of the Lydd – Appledore railway line, so all they would need to do is build a terminus station that links it to the main terminal building of the airport.

Having said this, I am in agreement with others though about the airports potential. Personally, I think that Kent International (MSE) has more of a chance of becoming a regional airport for the South-East, simply because the facilities are better there. Whilst Lydd has just begun trials for 737’s, MSE can already handle 747’s and soon be capable of handling A380’s due to its long runway and large freight/cargo handling terminal…and seeings as MSE is closer to several major towns (Margate, Ramsgate) and cities (Canterbury, Rochester) within Kent, I think it will be more popular for tourists. You can tell I’m a Kentish railway fan! 😉

I like it in the days off Steam and still like the owned railways off today:D I see in are local paper today there where 200 complaints over the 737 visit.Dont think Lydd will happen some how might be wrong.

That Train is only to Ashford Canterbury Dover and Ramsgate;)

James

Well, Ashford is pretty close. It shouldn’t be too hard (I suppose!) to build a station at Lydd – the original passenger building is still there. All you would need to do would be to build a halt, perhaps, and serve it with a shuttle from Ashford station via Appledore. That way, passengers from Eastbourne, Hastings and Brighton could access Lydd with only one change of train, as could passengers from London, Tonbridge, Canterbury and Dover…

Those who are taking the mick out of the London-Ashford name appearingly do not live local.
Its an easy trainride into london, and South Eastern will be running high speed Hitatchi trains into London from the coast passing throught Ramsgate (For Manston) and Ashford providing less than one hours journey from the coast along the CTRL into London; for commuter fares…so Lydd (as of 2008) will be readily and quickly reachable from London as will Manston.

There is still a railway line to the power station which is used for the transport of nuclear flasks but there are no passenger facilities. There is the rather lovely narrow gauge railway though…

Hi

Yes I know of the narrow gauge steam railway, that would be a pretty unique rail-air link 🙂

Thanks

That’s the idea, after alighting from the steam powered train, your four cylinder Austin 10 or maybe a Morris Oxford taxi takes you to the airport where you do not see any x-ray machines, customs officers and climb the airstairs to your Douglas Dakota, Bristol Freighter or Airspeed Ambassador…

….for your flight across the Channel to Le Touquet where the train is waiting for you on the apron (have they ripped up the tracks here?).

Hi

Sorry wasnt there, but thought id mention I used Lydd many years ago flying with Janus Airways on a Herald and a Viscount to Oostende and Beavais.

I think the RSPB is not keen on the expansion plans due to the reserve nearby at Dungerness, I do have sympathy with them as it is a very important reserve. Is there still a railway line running nearby I think it was used for freight to the power station, but this would be useful for passengers getting to Lydd and not having to use a car ?

London Ashford Airport – Would be an ideal airport for Ryanair once the runways extended. Miles away from the city it serves!
