Lysander Glider tugs.

Can anyone help me out?

I’m trying to find some details of the towing hitch installation used as a stop-gap on Lysander IIA’s. I’ve got diagrams of just about every hitch but that one.

I’m guessing it was a Type 4 unit but I need details of how it was fitting to the tail or better still a picture/diagram.

Also if anyone has a picture of one of the Lysander IIA’s while it was being used for tugging it would be helpful just to know the markings. I wouldn’t mind knowing what the Ringway one looked like either 🙂

Serials for tug Lysanders were V9286, V9291, V9293, V9316, V9373, V9382, V9503, V9516, V9578, V9579, V9586, V9591, V9675, V9679, V9704, V9720, V9722 V9726 and V9517 was the CLE/Ringway machine.

Thanks!

Hi,
If you find out the name of the magazine I would be interested to know.

I found similar ones but not the same ones, as it does not show the tow arrangement.

Jerry,

Thanks for that. The poster on Brit Modeller was actually the person I was making the enquiry for. As they made that post today I’ve just fired them a quick mail to ask where the Russian diagram came from.

Our own forumite Aeronut provided me with a copy of the AFEE report on the proposed structure although it was sparse on details on where it was actually fitted. I had originally though it would of been extra strengthening of the rear fuselage framework to take a towing plug in the same way the Hector and Audax had. I never would of figured they would of built a frame *around* the rudder. I guess I discounted it as I would of assume that the tailplane structure wasn’t strong enough and it would of interfered with the movement of the rudder and airflow around it.

I’ve found a picture of a Lysander now being prepared to tug a Hotspur and although at an angle you can make out this rather odd towing construction wrapped around the tail.

There is a photograph of the triple drum gear and winch in the 4+ publication Westland Lysander Mks I,II,III/IIIA,III(SD)/IIIA(SD),TT MKs.I,II,III. ISBN 80-902559-1-4. It is credited to GKN Westland Helicopters via Fred Ballam.

The AFEE reports I have covering the Lysander tug don’t show the installation. All they do show though is the additional structural tubes required to take the tow point (implies it to be in the tailcone).
There is also an indistict photo used in an old edition of the Airfix Magazine series on the Army flying which shows an external tubular frame work around the fin / rudder. Whether this was the tow structure or just a cable fender I know not.

Having said that I’m guessing that this mod. was very much ‘after market’?

The Special Duties mods were also ‘after market’, but Fred Ballam provided excellent refs. Judwin is indeed the successor on those tasks!

I believe our very own Judwin is custodian of Westland archives, maybe worth a PM.

You’ll probably get there before I do though – and the ticket’ll be cheaper!

Ignore my earlier comment re the FAAM – muddling target tugs with glider tugs, the FAA used the former, not the latter of course.

I know there is a file at the PRO with the evaluation tests done at Ringway and that the fitting was manufactured in their workshops. Sadly it’ll be a while before I can get to London to look. 🙁

I don’t recall off the cuff finding any useful data when I was researching my book. If I get time, I’ll have a look.

Obviously the rear fuselage fairing (metal sheeting) would be removed and the tow hitch fitted to the internal tubular structure.

I suggest to contact the Westland Archives, if you haven’t already, as well as the usual suspects called DoRiS and Lambeth. The FAAM might be another avenure if the previous fail you!
