Michael (T5) and myself headed to Madeira a few weeks ago, for a weekend of aircraft. The viewing area at the airport is great and offers some really varied views across the airport.
The aircraft litrally park up right in front of you. A larger lens is needed if your after catching anything landing or taking off.
We had a full day there on the Saturday (Air Berlin day – total of 5) and around 3 quarters of the day there Sunday before heading back to Gatwick in the afternoon. Sunday was a very quiet day, with a wait of up to 2 hours for anything to come in or out.

P.S. A quick tip for night shots with artificial light, have a quick scan through your manual and try using Custom White Balance rather than Auto or another setting. It will make the white appear more natural and reduce the colour cast of the lights, it really makes a difference at somewhere like FNC where the opportunities for night shooting are superb. The difference it makes looks something like this (posted in tiny thumbnail format so as not to detract from your images):
