Just had a call from a publishing colleague who went to visit Madingley Cemetery (I think yesterday?) but found it closed.
If anyone is planning a visit, they may just want to check beforehand.

Forces Padres have been advised that they could be arrested if they perform any of their duties whilst this is all happening …

Good news
WASHINGTON, Oct. 5, 2013 β Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today he is recalling most of the Defense Department civilians who were placed on furlough as a result of the government shutdown which began Oct. 1.
βToday, I am announcing that most DOD civilians placed on emergency furlough during the government shutdown will be asked to return to work beginning next week,β he said.

The government shutdown has closed their national parks – because without government you can’t walk in the woods…
Number of times I have visited Madingley and parked in the coach park (Cambridge Road entrance) and walked around and never seen any ‘staff’ on duty.

Is this a consequence of the “shutdown” in the US of their Civil Service and it’s facilities, now being extended to overseas US buildings??

The usual access from the main road has been closed for some time as they are nearing the end of a big redevelopment of the visitor facilities – the only access recently has been from the back road at the bottom of the cemetery.
I took some students there about ten days ago, just before the shutdown. Lots of work going on in the Chapel as well as the new Visitor Centre etc.
I know of someone who did visit in the last couple of days with a pair of very determined (and strongly Republican) Americans, who basically ignored the signs and entered anyway. I am not promoting this as a course of action, however!
Madingley is a wonderful and moving place, and I hope it is accessible to all again soon.

if you go in via the lane at the bottom you van access the cemetery.
