Magnesium rivets….

The purple ones as used on Spits etc. Are they straight Magnesium or 5056 series Aluminum?
Any idea of the specs & are they Icebox rivets?

I have to make a small wing section for display purposes & as I have about 40lb or so or various sized purple magnesium rivets I thought I’d use them just for the colour….
Undecided weather to make a second section from Stainless just for S&G’s:cool:

I have 1/16, 3/32, 1/8 & 5/32 sizes.

Just wanted to gets a heads up before I start bucking away. Been a minior eon since I used any of em & I can’t remember the details. They’re left over from the PA908 build back in the early 90’s.

Just remember that AS2230 are 120 degree rivets. I’ll be surprised if you can find a countersink in the USA for them!

Rick,
Those black L36 rivets are in fact pure Aluminuim, thus very soft…great for filling up those holes that you did not mean to drill!

Chumpy.

All the holes I drill are deliberately drilled…

… it’s just that sometimes they’re not exactly where I expected..;)

I tracked down Linread & sent then an email yesterday, just got up (9am here) & had a reply from them:

Hi Rick
You really do have some old rivets in your collection – I can’t remember the last time we made the AS2230 series. From the control number you have on the boxes I would think these were made in the late 60’s or early 70’s.

The boxes as you say, are definitely our manufacture, but the bags are almost certainly not ours –the 5320-00-151-5411 is the NATO Stock number for this rivet ( which we do not use on any of our labels) and also the lot number is not from a sequence we have ever used. At the time these were made there would have 3 or 4 manufacturers in the UK.

The material used is L86 Aluminium Alloy, and the surface finish is Anodise and dye purple – the colour is used as a material identifier, as there is no other quick way of telling the difference between the various alloys used to make rivets.

The popular materials were L86 ( purple) L58 ( green) and L36 ( black)
Copy of the spec is attached as requested.
Hope this is of some help to you

Then they included a pdf file that contained the blueprint & all the specs for the rivets. Guess I’ll do some rivet bashing on Tuesday πŸ™‚ I assume the L36 are steel? No idea where I got the idea the purple ones were Magnesium tho.

The date on the blueprint is 27-4-44…..”Issued by the Society of British Aircraft Constructors Ltd. 29 King St, London SW1″

Hi ZRX,
The purple rivets are not Mag alloyl, ‘Material 3L86’ spec as mentioned in your second post. Mag rivets are dyed green, spec no. for these DTD303.

Neither of them are Ice Box rivets just bash em in cold!

There is another thread quite near the top of the forum ‘heap’…Spitfire Aluminium that has much detail on the subject.

Cheers, Chumpy.
