Deal Falls Through for Su-30MK Sale to Malaysia
[14 May 2002] The Malaysian Prime Minister, Makhathir Mohamad intends to sign a declaration with U.S. President George Bush on the war against terrorism during his visit to Washington, representatives of the Malaysian government reported on Tuesday. Makhathir Mohamad and Bush`s meeting will take place on Tuesday.
It also became known on the threshold of these discussions that Malaysia, who is holding a tender for the upgrade of its air force, intends to obtain FA-18E/F Super Hornet airplanes of the American Boeing company. As the newspaper Utusan Malaysia writes, the choice already has been made for the use of the Boeing. The French firm Dassault and the Russian Sukhoy Design Bureau with its Su-30MK fighter also were taking part in the tender.
Malaysia, who is building up its military at the present time, already has obtained Polish tanks, French submarines and British and Russian air defense systems.
