Malev or British Airways to Budapest?

Hi,

I was today planning my latest college film that I will be producing in early 2005. With us wanting to be adventurous, we aim to make a short film overseas. At the moment, we are being drawn towards Hungary since we have carried out lots of research into the country and its capital city, Budapest.

We will hopefully make two trips to the city, one towards the end of this year (a long weekend) and then a week next March or April.

However, for those of you that have experienced service offered by British Airways or Malev.. who would you recommend for travel to Budapest?

Our options are:

British Airways

London Gatwick to Budapest – Boeing 737-400
Budapest to London Gatwick – Airbus A320

— OR —

London Heathrow to Budapest – Boeing 757-200
Budapest to London Heathrow – Boeing 757-200

Malev (Hungarian Airlines)

London Heathrow to Budapest – Boeing 737-400
Budapest to London Heathrow – Boeing 737-400

The prices vary only very slightly. British Airways from Gatwick want just under £100 return. To fly with them from Heathrow adds an extra £30 to the bill (per passenger). Malev wants £134.

Who would you choose?

It would be much more expensive as you would have to buy 2 single tickets. As single tickets cost twice as much as returns you would be paying four times as much! 😮

Never understood the reason behind that. Looks like nearly all normal airlines are doing that, SNBA look like one of the only exception. Even then the oneway fare is only in some cases half the return fare.

Here’s another very good site for cheap flights: www.traveljungle.com. They search all the usual sites: expedia, opodo, travelocity, all locos, BMI, BA etc. I’ve used them before and the saving over other sites can be £20 or more.

Yep, Virgin Travelstore does it again!

Flying out & returning a week later, Feb 2005, from London STN to BUD with Malev:

£78.80

That’s only £2 dearer than Wizz, yet Wizz is a lcc isn’t it?

There are two times to choose from and the aircraft are 736s.

If you want to out of LHR with Malev its £104.10, £5 cheaper than Expedia when going by dc10fan’s prices.

Virgin Travelstore is so good, and to think I found out about it from Graham Norton when one of the prizes given away at the end of the show was ‘courtsey of Virgin Travelstore’ 🙂

For the cheapest prices try:

www.virgintravelstore.com

They are ALWAYS cheaper than Expedia, AirlineNetwork, the actual airline’s wbesite and travelocity.
Last year I booked a flight to JFK from LHR with BA. BA wanted £275 online, Expedia £276 and Virgin Trvavelstore £263, I couldn’t find cheaper anywhere.
Also, when searching for a friend who wanted to go when BA had their sale on (NY for £199), Virgin Travelstore had it for £189! In fact, I have found they are even cheaper than their sister company – Virgin Atlantic when it comes to VS’s own flights! – Virgin from LON-EWR, VS’s website: £249, VT: £239 !

So, try it out for the dates you want.

P.S. If you are a member of VS’s flying club, you will get a point for every pound you spend, whatever flight or airline you book!

Id go with BA. Purely because I believe BA has high standards and I trust BA, I dont really know Malev that well. I would probably expect a better service from BA too, and finally I would rather buy a ticket on a British airline before any other countries airlines.

What’s the film about and why isn’t your college covering the travel costs ?

The film is slightly vague at the moment. Seeing as we won’t be issued the brief for the coursework until September or maybe even later, we’ve got plenty of time to start thinking of ideas.

Basically, our two major projects for the second year are entirely up to us. We can choose where we film it, what we film; whether it be a documentary, short film etc. Since my three big projects of this year were all local, myself and others want to splash out a little and do something exciting.

The college doesn’t really help us with anything financially. We are all paying to do the course, but don’t seem to get any financial support with projects like this.

I should have finished college last Friday, but have only finished today, eventually handing my 12 minute short film in nearly a week late. Our budget for this was huge and we’ve all had to pay for that. A group of six of us had to buy a brand new suit for our main character, food for everybody, travel expenses etc. Although this came to only about £180 in total, it’s not something every student can afford!

Likewise, with our live studio project which we made 2 weeks ago today (27 May), we had to film several inserts. This involved travelling, using public transport a lot of the time. Public transport down here is not cheap and certainly not reliable. Our two presenters also had to attend rehearsals and travel from central London two or three times a week for about a month. Again, we had to pay for them to get to us – without any support from the college.

However, we do have contacts in Hungary, so we will try and negotiate a couch to sleep on whilst over there. For a little bit extra, we are going to end up with what could potentially be the best film.

I would definately recommend Malev. Have flown to BUD twice with them, all sectors by Tupolev 134/154 ex LHR. Service and crews very good both times. Check out www.malev.hu/.

I flew Malev in November from LHR to BUD and was impressed with the quality of service. The cabin crew on both flights were attentive and the aircraft were clean and well maintained. The meals were obviously inspired by Hungary, but they were full meals and wholesome. The cabin crew also brought around freshly baked bread rolls – a nice touch – we were offered a second helping and 3 rounds of complimentary drinks! The return flight on a 737NG also had overhead TVs which showed silent video sketch shows and cartoons.

I haven’t flown BA to BUD, but on other recent BA flights to Europe in EuroTraveller of similar duration have been good. BA usually brings round the All Day Deli (basically a picnic box) though on the last flight my water had burst open and flooded the box. The cabin crew obligingly gave me a replacement. BA’s cabin crew are usually good and the overall service is of a consistently high quality. I doubt the 757s would have AV systems (I understand its only the ‘long-haul’ European 757s which do/did).

To be honest, I’d choose Malev for the simple reason that its something different. That said, I can’t collect points with Malev 🙂

You could go from STN for £84 on Malev 737

Stansted is simply too far away for me. By the time I had used public transport getting there, I’d be out of pocket compared to getting to Heathrow and flying from there instead.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

I checked my BA timetable(d/l from their site) and found the following:

LHR flights on 319/320 and B767-300 in Jan/Feb 2005.(no 757)
LGW flights not listed in Jan/Feb next year.(Perhaps they stop in Oct)

To book flights I always use www.expedia.co.uk. They’re offering fares of £103 on BA from LHR and £109 on Malev in Jan/Feb. I can’t comment on Malev service, I usually pick my flights to go on a particular a/c.
Malev 737 fleet currently contains 5 x 300s, 5 x 400s, 5 x 600s, 5 x 700s and
4 x 800s. Recent flights have been op. by 737NG.

PS You could go from STN for £84 on Malev 737

I wouldn’t be able to give you any advice on Malev, but they now fly from Stansted and you’d be almost guaranteed to get atleast one flight in the Fokker70.

I tend to fly with the airline of the country I’m going to (unless BA or another UK carrier is much cheaper) as it ‘gets me in the mood’ for that country and I like to travel on loads of different airlines.
