MAM Vixen update

I have had many requests regarding the restoration of the Sea Vixen, XN685, that I work on at the Midland Air Museum and how it is progressing. The weather has slowed things down a bit but steady progress is being made. I have included some images of the Vixen to give you an idea of how she is.

Enjoy!! If they came out that is!

Apropos sunburn, when I was posted to Bahrain in 1968 we were warned most severely that to report sick with sunburn would be a punishable offence!

Too true PL. Getting sunburned was a chargeable offence, “Unfit for Duty” – and probably “Damaging Air Force Property” as well. 😉

When I was on Gan, the most tender and most exposed parts of you seemed to be the tops of your feet. Many a bloke on the island had “flip-flop bars” in white on a red background for the first week or so. But at least we could go oggin trogging (paddle in the ocean) between seeing the kites in and away, the crewroom was only 150ft or so from the surf. 😎 😎 😎

Gratuitous “RAF’s Island in the Sun” pic – ’twas good in the mob in those days . . .

I very quickly learned that you can get a nice tan through clothing – and while living on the French Riviera for 9 years a while ago I only took my shirt off outdoors to go swimming!

I’m sure a forum meet could be possible at the museum, providing we have no other events on at the time. I was working on ‘Vicky’ as I call her, again today and did a fair wack of work on the tail, and as LesB has said, the sun is back of it’s hols……………I worked on that tail for about two hours and in that time took my t-shirt off for about an hour and a half……………..I am now suffering a little with a burnt back! I don’t need to preach to much but while all us aviation restoration freaks work on these machines, just take into consideration the power of the fire in the sky and how we work in it for lengths of time! Watch your back, neck, head or any other part of your body you wish to expose while ‘oh great light in yonder sky’ is with us!!

Mmm – havent been there for ages, and it really seems to have turned the corner. I may take a wonder up there next time I’m in the area.

Nobody organises it. Somebody suggests a date and we either argue about it or go.

We need a forum meet to MAM at some point this year chaps.

As DH says, that’s been mooted several times. Maybe the time is ripe now as the airframes are (mostly) in good nick and the sun seems to be back off its hols. And you can get exceeding good toasties!

Who organises such things? Is it you Nick?

We’ve been muttering about that for 18 months or so. Looks like we might have to do it instead of mutter.

Don’t forget the Vampire and Meteor indoors, I consider myself very lucky to live down the road from such treasures 🙂

This is what I personally love about MAM. It’s a friendly place where things happen on a regular basis. I’ve been going for the last four years or so and I can remember the F4, F101, Lightning, F104, Hunter, Canberra, Vulcan, Javelin, Heron, T33 and possibly the Seahawk as well as the Vixen receiving attention (apologies if I’ve missed anything out.) It’s a bit of a special place where access is often allowed to some of the exhibits. My Dad’s face (he was 76 at the time) after he left the flight deck of the Vulcan was a picture. The museum assistant must have spent nearly an hour talking to my Dad and he’s never forgotten it. If I say I’m off over to Cosford he’ll say have a good time. If I say I’m going to MAM it’s “hang on, I’ll get my coat.”

I consider MAM to be one of our aviation treasures.

Bit of a detail question robmac, but what paint/enamel did you use on the nose-leg. I fly from a grass strip and the nose-strut on the Airtourer takes a bit of a bashing and needs some work done on it. All help gratefully received.
