MAM's Gannet

Pretty much finished its re-paint now (last Tuesday), thought you’d like to see a few pix.

The ‘composite’ shows a before and after state. The ‘before’ pic is Papa Lima’s from his recent visit to MAM, (hope you don’t mind me using it PL).

The cockpit pix show the trainee’s station. Again, before and after pix showing that a little TLC can do wonders. The green mould wasn’t just painted over either, areas were treated before finishing.

Hey, lovely pic Les!!

However, with the greatest of respect, you should have chosen a more photogenic angle for Malcolm, see below for an example :diablo:

Anyway, slightly off topic, the Museum currently have several TSR2 1;72 Airfix kits for sale for 17.99. They are surplus due to an order that failed.

Cheers

Kev 🙂

PC probs at the museum at the moment so emails may not be read or responded to for some time – comments in the guestbook would be nice – other people can see them then too!

Cheers for the heads up, added an entry to the guestbook as well

Terrific job to all concerned! It just makes a trip to MAM even more of a priority. If only certain museums with a certain Victor and Shack could do to their planes what you guys have done to yours!

Good idea Les, e-mail on it’s way to them – for anyone that got confused and couldn’t find the e-mail address like me (finally found it on the location page), it’s midlandairmuseum@aol.com

Can’t describe how much this museum means to me, my earliest memories of planes come from this place, and luckily it’s local enough so when I need a quick aviation fix after studying too hard it’s perfect!

PapaLima
Access to cockpits is pretty much only granted I believe if you have a guided tour. I know MAM, and other museums, are twitchy about this with regard to high-sided airframes like the Gannet ever since that Concorde incident at Filton. Best bet is to ask when you get there but don’t be disappointed if there is no one to ‘guide’ you. Even better I reckon would be to e-mail them prior to a visit and ask then. Or do as I do, go there frequently enough to be there when a cockpit canopy is opened for other work. But be aware of H&S conditions and constraints on a museum, be sympathetic if politely refused.

At MAM, most cockpits are accessible to view through the canopy. This is because the museum has constructed robust steps for some aircraft for the public’s viewing pleasure (as they say). This is pretty enlightened if you ask me.

I believe all missing insts have now been identified. Not party to whether they’ll be fitted or not.

Don’t really know what’s next for a paint-job. I see them working on the Argosy and that will maybe get a coat this summer but it’s a big job for volunteeers only. But I did see a couple of blokes working on the wings of the F-104, so maybe . . . 😉

Thanks for the compliments everybody, I’m sure MAM appreciates them. Tell you what, why not go to their website and mail them with your sentiments.

😉

Looks great. Any nearer finding out what the missing instruments are Les?

I’m pleased and flattered that you used my pic, LesB.
Now I have to arrange another trip to see the results for myself (but it will probably be in July, so don’t sell the Gannet until after then!)
Can the general public see inside the cockpits, by the way? After asking permission, of course.

Looking good, what other aircraft at MAM are being repainted/next in line for repaints? Really good to see them in colours, especially the Hunter and Canberra
