MAM's HS125 – Hydraulic Demonstrator

The blokes are pretty much finished on this project now, just a few bits of tidying up and a couple of guages to fit.

As you can see, the effect is pretty damned good considering the work has been carried out over the xmas period and including the recent bad wx.

Most of the ‘visible’ work has been in the interior (see ‘compare’ pix below), and the cockpit. Cockpit now lights up and includes a radio (tuned to Coventry Tower as with that in their Canberra WF922, and Vulcan). Maybe a small thing to most but the work carried out on the toilet has really brought it back to its VIP condition (can’t use it while airframe is stationary of course 😉 )

Thew ‘frame has now been fitted with stronger and newer supports – you wouldn’t believe the condition of the old nose support, but if you visit MAM, ask them. The condition was, I believe, one of the priority reasons for the project as MAM wanted the Demonstrator back in use again.

This exhibit is well worth a visit this summer, if only to try pumping the legs, flaps and airbrakes up and down – which is strangely satisfying in some ways.

Is there an airframe ‘wants’ list for the 125 that people could have to help?

As it happens Dave, yes!

Could do with yokes for both the control columns. Prototype type units would be good but I’m told that for the moment, any 125 yoke type would fill the gaps. See cockpit pic below.

Also, but possibly rarer, a replacement for the pilot’s front windscreen panel as the in-situ is cracked and delaminating.

Another item has just been re-fitted (where do they keep getting them from?). Anyway, it’s the food storage locker. With that now in place, and the bar, this ‘frame is becoming quite a, snug little crewroom/cafe type place.

Another fantastic MAM restoration. This collection never fails to please!

You really should try to get up to MAM this summer Albert, I think you’d enjoy the place.

Are those her original colours when she was built, as I have never seen a colour photo of ‘RYB in her original scheme?

Mmm. . . don’t know you’d want to hear the answer mate .

As I understand it the frame originally had a silver underside. A pic of a magazine front cover has been framed and mounted on the forward b/head of the pax space (see below and pic #4 above). Don’t know if it shows MAM’s airframe or not.

For what it’s worth…there is/was an 70’s-era 125 derelict at the Boise, Idaho Airport a couple of years back. Might still be around and have some cheap parts.

As I recall, it was one of two owned by a local firm and its sister was lost when it hit a mountain on approach in the mid 70s.

I’ll ask Malc. Not working on the project myself, I’m not really sure to be honest Dave, but I’ll find out.

I know that their are a couple of instruments missing but thats about it.

Looks great, and a sight better than ‘YC inside.

Trident passenger seats I reckon!

. . . and finally

Now that the finishing touches are being put to the 125 it can be revealed that the main purpose behind this project and the reason the work was carried out so unstintingly under difficult and daunting prevailing conditions of cold, damp, windiness, etc (and that’s just the Chf Eng!). They were secretly making a hide-away – a bar!

So, if you can’t find a guide at MAM this year when you visit, knock on the door of the HS125 Hydraulic Demonstrator.

I remember my last visit, seeing her when she was first delivered and thinking how messy she looked, but what a job:) she looks great.

I have always been interested in this airframe if it could be fitted with a pair of Series 1 wings to make her a complete airframe again. From memory she had the full span wings from build unlike ‘YA’ and ‘YB’.
