My first stab at aviation photography. Any criticisms gratefully received.
I was only there for an hour due to my fingers dropping of due to frostbite!

Thanks Cloud 9.
I’ve been to the car park. I went yesterday, so hopefully will post a few better pictures on here later this week. It was much busier (and much warmer) and was teeming with spotters and families enjoying the day.
I’ve just got a Canon 450D, but haven’t really mastered it yet (evidently!). I’ve only used ‘auto’ up to now.
I’ll be getting a zoom lens soon and will keep on experimenting.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Welcome Mostonian, and a great start to aviation photography!
Particularily like the shot of the Continental 757…very nice!:)
What camera do you use?
Keep practising and posting up, you will always find people on here that are able and willing to give you advice to help you improve.
As for Manchester viewing, have you tried the multi-storey car park (think its Terminal 2, but might be wrong?!), go up to the top level and you get a great view over the apron from there. Also, another area thats good is the pub/hotel which is about a 10-15min walk from the terminals, you get a good view of planes arriving from here!

A good start and welcome to the picture sharing pages.
As abutcher1985 said getting a good position to put the light in the right place is the key.Unfortunately the winter doesnt help because there isnt many hours of sunlight. i’ve posted 6 pictures as an example, all taken from the same place but in different months and times through different phases of the day.
Note how in the ELAL pic it’s backlit.but the others the sun is nicely lighting the details of the Aircraft.

An excellent start.
My one suggestion would be to shoot with the sun behind you. This isn’t easy from the AVP at Manchester, but if you photograph aircraft as they taxi out from the stands, the lighting will generally be better.
If the light is on the side of the aircraft, the details stand out a lot more.
This isn’t a terribly good example (someone else may have a better one) but look at the picture below. The JetBlue Airbus is in full sun, but the Delta aircraft behind is in the shadow. You can see the details are much clearer on the Airbus because the sun is shining on it:
If you have a car, there are lots of much better spots at Manchester where the lighting issues won’t be a problem
