Manchester Meet: Updates (Merged)

I ask the forebearance of the Moderators with this thread, just for a day or two.

For those of us meeting on the 10th at MAN, T5 is looking into organising a tour of Concorde so Michael would appreciate knowing the numbers who would like to go on a tour as he may be able to negotiate a group discount.

Further to the piece I wrote about Flight Captain Short in the MAN Saturday thread, I propose taking half an hour to tidy the grave and to lay a wreath I will obtain from the RBL in memory of Flight Captain South and Senior Flight Engineer Bird. Further details appear in the thread on Historic http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=44703

I am also considering inviting the Padre of MAN to join us and say a few words. This should take no more than half an hour in total and will be an opportunity for us all to show our gratitude to a civilian crew who died in time of war.

I sincerely hope this does not offend anyone. Feel free to contact myself or T5 by pm or leave a message here. As soon as we have heard from all those who would like to attend the meet, perhaps the Moderators would be kind enough to close the thread?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

kev35 and T5.

The Concorde Tour isn’t looking too good.

Another email has revealed that it is £20 per person but the minimum charge is £250. That is daylight robbery!

I’ll be happy to do that anyway. Always had a soft spot for Tridents. Remember one day back in the early 70’s when it was too bad to land at Heathrow and several turned up at BHX. only wish I’d been interested in taking photo’s then….

I think some of you need to go back to the start and rethink your “donation” to the Trident fund ? 😀

Hope you don’t mind me bumping this up to the top again.

Would those going to the meet state whether or not they would be interested in visiting the Churchyard. It is literally two minutes walk from the AVP and I can assure you The whole tidying up process and wreath laying will be completed in less than half an hour.

Don’t feel obliged to come if you don’t want to, I am happy to do the work and lay the wreath myself.

And then get back to the business of trying to improve my photography;)

Either way I’ll do it. I agree with Grey area that it is robbery, but, it’s the only chance I’ll have of seeing on board. I’ve been on the one at Duxford but it is stuffed with testing equipment and gives no concept at all on what a service aircraft would be like. If I don’t do it now my legs might not manage the stairs in twelve months time. And of course the high price is only representative of the huge costs when the aircraft was in service. It’s a dinosaur, rare as hen’s teeth and damn expensive.

Put me down for definite.

I think they will only do it if we have sufficient people who are interested. I have to agree, its a lot for a tour of a retired aircraft, but its likely to be only chance to get on it.

If you have done the tour before, this one lasts longer and is exclusively for those people going to the meet, no other members of the public, so it would be ideal for photographs etc, knowing that there aren’t too many people in the way to spoil your shots.

£20…. Hmmm, probably would still be able to manage it, does seem a bit expensive though, no offence, but its not exactly a ‘private tour’ with so many of us there!

The Concorde tour would just be a bonus for me, im looking forward to spotting more :D.

Not visited Concorde yet and I frequently visit the AVP @ MAN!

They are ripping you off in my opinion. For £12 and you only get 3 mins in the flightdeck!? 😉

It’s well worth it! Grabbing the pilot’s seat is well worth it, for however long, not to mention the fact that you sit in the seats in the cabin whilst listening to someone throw various facts/figures/information at you. Which are very comfortable btw. 😉 It just has something more to it than the various prototypes that you can also have a look at around the country.

Bear in mind it’s the only Conc in the UK that you are able to go into and sit in the flightdeck.Filton charge 12.50 for their tour’s and there is no access into the flightdeck.East Fortune is 8.00 and again no flightdeck access.

Manchester Meet: Slight Problem?

Hi,

Yesterday I sent an email off to the Concorde Tour people to enquire about the cost of their tours and to see if we (those of us going to Manchester on August 10) would qualify for a group discount.

It just so happens that on that particular day, there are no Concorde Tours available and even if there was, there is no such thing as a group discount.

Assuming the aircraft is available on this day (bearing in mind it is closed to the public), they are happy to open it up for a private tour, just for those of us wanting to see it, but the regular ticket price of £12 would jump to £20. It does seem that you get to spend longer on the aircraft and to see more of it than you normally would.

Any thoughts from those of you coming along?

Just to keep you updated, I have taken responsibility for the Concorde tour and have tried to ring the Manchester Tour Centre many times now. The line constantly seems to be engaged, so I have now emailed them and asked for availability on Wednesday 10 August and whether or not we would qualify for a group discount.

Like Kev said above, it would be much appreciated if you could post your name below if you definitely want to go on the tour or PM me just to confirm. If you’re undecided, please don’t put your name down, it will just confuse me.

I’ve also requested further information about other attractions on offer at Manchester.
