Manchester survivors

Just finished reading a brief history of the Manchester and started wondering what happened to the survivors after they were withdrawn from front-line service in mid ’42. 202 were built and about 40% were lost on operations and in accidents. Obviously, they were of no use for further bombing missions but were they used for training, broken up for spares or was it possible that they could have formed the basis of re-builds as Lancasters?

I realise that the Lanc and the Manchester were considerably different, but as the prototype Lanc was originally a Manchester with four engines, there must have been a fair bit of commonality between the two.

So, what happened to the survivors?

Regards

I wouldn’t mind if one of the surviving Lancasters was rebuilded into a Manchester or a Lancastrian. BW Roger

Well actually, R5858, S-Sugar at Hendon was ordered and laid down as a Manchester, being converted very early in production to a Lancaster…..
