Manston Canberra

Does anyone know if the Canberra is still on display at Manston. I went on a school trip there back in the late 70’s and while we were examining it, my teacher told of me of his days in the RAf, and the embarrasement the Canberras caused during an excercise, when they simply flew higher than the defending aircraft. Sorry to ask such a simple question, but my copy of Wrecks & Relics is packed away.

Shame to hear about the Javelin as well, since that was a real highlight of my visit there, and even in the late 70’s, there could not have been too many of the them around.

Hello All,

Thinks the Canberra was WE168 (?) and It was scrapped in about 1990 at the same time as the Javelin.

Pic from jbs shows Canberra B.15, WT205. Potted history here. (jbs, could I use your pic on my site please?)

Another is a hulk on Manston’s fire dump is WK124. This TT.18 has been there for some years now. Potted history here.

Manston also had a PR.3 Gate Guard up to about 4 years ago. Number escapes me at the moment but I know it was completely re-painted around 1999 or so. It has since disappeared though to who knows where. Probably cut up along the the Javelin Gate Guard the stood with it.

This was the only Canberra shaped thing down at Manston when I visited on 21/07/2004, and it was inside the RAF Manston History Museum (next door to the Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial Museum)

Not sure of the serial but I’m sure someone else on here will know

Hope this is useful
