I wondered if anyone mightbe able to help.
Trying to locate a exact position given by a map reference number.
I cant find anywhere on how to convert this to a new os map position at all and its bugging me now.
All i know is the 1943 report states map reference WF6999 18M N/E of lincoln.
The area was market stainton lincs but i am actually trying to pinpoint the exact location but with no access to any os maps of that period i cant pin point the area.
Hope someone on here might have a old 1940,s os map of lincolnshire and maybe help me pin point the area.

Using http://www.echodelta.net/mbs/eng-translator.php the reference, which is from the Cassini system, translated to 53° 18′ 03” N 0° 09′ 44” W
And, yes that is a fairly good lat long for Market Stainton, being TF 22457 79814 on the current OS system.
I should also point out that the reference only describes a 1km x 1km box.

During WW2 the British Army used a different grid system, so any map references based on this are useless on today’s OS maps. I suggest you try you local library who should have an example in their maps section.

Have you tried: http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm?l. You can get OS NGR and Lat/Lon. I find it very good.
