Mark Hanna

Has an investigation report been published on the Buchon crash in which Mark Hanna died?If not, does anyone know why it is taking so long to complete? Will it be made public?

Crikey – 19 years. Doesn’t seem like yesterday. I was working at Historic Flying at the time, and took a call from OFMC that morning with the news. Nothing was the same again.

I met Mark briefly at Duxford when he was coming out of one of the hangars he seemed very nice and quite talkative it was a terrible shame we lost him as he would have bought his fantastic talents to newer highs if he had more time of this I am sure, RIP.

I’d heard less than complimentary words used about his time undergoing flying training, how I wish I’d asked Ray (his dad) if there was any truth in the rumours when both were still with us.
I chatted with Ray last at Biggin Hill in 2005 after his brilliant display there. Lovely chap.

I remember reading the awful news in the paper next morning, and feeling shocked and numb.

Mark was an inspiration, and one of the best, but of course, he had a great mentor.

That watch on his wrist looks like a Breitling to me. A commercial picture from the era of the Breitling Fighters?

There was “amateur footage” on the New Zealand TV news of the accident, I remember being in tears watching it as he was an idol for me growing up. Just recently I watched a video on YouTube – narrated by Bernard Chabbert – featuring interviews with him and Ray about MH434 and flying in general, as well as one of him taking Sarah for a spin in their Phantom.

I never got to meet him or see him fly in person, but he is very much missed. Thanks for posting, Anna.

I found this photo a few weeks ago online, I hope someone knows who took the photo so credit can be given.

That P40 display in the video,so much accuracy, precision, high energy safe aerobatics, smooth and controlled low flying and that landing-just superb.

My earliest recollection of seeing Mark fly, was when he flew the P-40 at Henlow.

Thanks for posting the pilot notes Duggy. A fascinating insight into flying these aircraft and some very interesting comparisons between types.

If you have more I for one would be keen to read them.

To watch Mark’s displays was a pleasure & a thrill, to meet him in person was a great privilege, an absolute gentleman, he will be remembered not only for his skill as a pilot, but also for his friendly & respectful personality. My thanks to you Flygirl for starting this thread.

Regards, Rich.
