Watching my local evening TV news and it seems that one of the two Mars water bombers from Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island have been offered to help fight the fires in Greece. It would be an incredible journey for the crews and I’m sure very helpful in putting the fires down.

Why do they have to ask Canada, Russia is closer!

Didn’t Evergreen shelved that design?
Yes, but the aircraft is probably still around somewhere. (Mirana Airpark?)
And their maintenance dept. could probably re-commission it in fairly short order.

With luck, a single aerial application should be sufficient to restore life to normality.
A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play.

If Greece needs large tankers, might I suggest the Evergreen 747? (The DC-10 conversion is busy in California).

Are there large enough protected harbors for them to operate from enroute?
I’d hate to see them operate from open ocean off of Greenland or Iceland…

-It could be there in hours, not days
-Maintence would be far less of a problem.

‘They’d have to go through Newfoundland, probably jump off at Gander, I’m assuming, to Greenland, Iceland, the British Isles and then down into Greece through Europe,” he said’

Martin Mars to Greece?
Hello Mars types:
I may be able to help somewhat with some of the Mars transit flight speculation. Hawaii Mars (Red-tailed CF-LYL, the bottom-drop-door aircraft and machine that would likely be deployed to Greece if the mission comes to pass) has been reconfigured from its original 12,000 USgal fuel capacity down to 5,000 USgal capacity. The 4 Wright R-3350’s burn @150 USgph each, therefore CF-LYL has a fuel endurance of @ 8.3 hrs (with no reserve). Cruise speed at 10,000 ft. is @ 185 kts therefore a maximum leg length would be @ 1400 nautical miles. Phillipine Mars (White-tailed CF-LYK, the side-drop-door aircraft) still has its original 12,000 USgal tanks fitted however it has not been maintained through the summer at the same state of readiness as CF-LYL. The new owner of the Mars (Coulson Aircrane) presently only staffs flight crew for one of the two machines.
The keeners in the forum can get out their Rand-McNally world maps and start plotting the likey route and fuel stops. Re-fueling can be accomplished from a tanker truck on shore using the floating fuel hose carried in the aircraft when on detached operations from the Sproat Lake base.

If it happens I would expect Marseille would be the best bet, the French Securite Civile fire bombers fly from there so there will be an area already in use for their Canadair’s

Just musing what the ferry range of the Mars would be and, if it made it to Europe, where it might stage through? Ireland, the UK or France – and where would be most suitable?Roger Smith.
Surely Foynes?:)

Despite the horrendous news reports from Greece dare I say the prospect of seeing a Mars is exciting.

If you miss it in the UK, it would seem to be appropriate to post this video, 3.30 minutes to remind us of the plane in action!

Well if the teams concerned do get called in, I hope they can get there in time and they can pull this off and help get the fires out. I for one wish them all the best and I hope the Greeks accept their offer sharpish. Bex

Transit Flight
It would be good for Greece does take up the offer as this was an arson started fire I understand and the greek Governmont have not got what is available to stop the fires.
A number of people will be able to have alook at the aircraft on route I would have at a guess?.
We will have to try and see what her route would be< she would have to tech stop on route?
If she does get airbourne what routeing whould she be takeing? I would have a guess few people might be able to see her transit U.K. airspace?
