Thought this had been mentioned before, I missed it 1st time round but it’s been on over the past week & I’m just wondering if he still owns this Stearman?

the third episode was rather good I thought, then again i may be biased…. Watched both 3rd and 4th today but sadly not my tape.
By: pimpernel - 17th December 2006 at 19:02
I do not know if this was fate or not but part 4 was un watch-able after I taped it. (Yes, taped, I am have not upgraded to HDD drives etc yet.)
I taped both the 3rd & 4th parts last Tuesday as I am working shifts at the moment. Watched part 3 with no problems at all. 4th part was with sound but no picture. I thought the tape was duff so I chucked it.
A second opportunity to watch was last night so I taped it again but this time with a new tape straight out of the cellophane, I was out with friends so I couldn’t watch it.
Blow me the same thing happened again, part 3 was fine and part 4 was sound only.
Did anyone catch either Tuesday or Saturdays showing and was it watch-able with both sound and vision? Surely fate cannot happen twice with the same programme, can it? 🙁
Thanks.
Brian.

There is a little more info on Discovery’s website at http://www.realtimetv.co.uk/aviator/index.shtml and I believe you can pay to see Discovery Real Time streamed to a computer screen.

Discovery Real Time used to be called Discovery Home and Leisure.
I couldn’t watch this programme last night as I was out. Will it be repeated on DRT or on one of the other Discovery channels (or maybe even on terrestrial TV)?

Don’t he and Mrs. Shaw have a Stearman each – “his n hers” ??
Roger Smith.
No, he and the toothsome Vicki shared the Stearman that came to such an unfortunate end at Old Buckenham a couple of years back. (Actually not an ‘end’ Mr Shaw is having it rebuilt – top man)

Twofour,
It sounds a really interesting series but I cannot view it. Is there any chance of it being available on DVD in the future?
Cheers,
Trapper 69
Likewise. Is this an obscure channel? I only have Freeview, and when I did have a Sky subsciption I don’t remember getting a Discovery RealTime – just regular Discovery.
I read about this in the Express (I think) at the weekend, had an interview with Martin. It’s not often I look out for stuff on TV, so it’s a shame I’ll miss this one. 🙁

A very enjoyable hour’s viewing with something to interest everyone.
I couldnt help smiling at Martin Shaw’s boyish enthusiasm during his Spitfire experience.
Well done to Martin Shaw and everyone involved in the programme, looking forward to the rest of the series.

That’s cos Discovery ‘Wings’ consists of trains, cars, tanks etc… these days in the 6-7pm slot followed by two prog’s of repeats from 7-9pm, and the whole lot repeated twice more until test card. Utter crap these days 😡
.
Tonight on Disco Wings:
1800 Killer Tanks………… er tanks have wings????
1900 Friendly Bandits ……… proggie about buyin a MIG
2000 Unsolved History …….. Death of the Red Baron
Repeated all night, deep joy, wot a load of rubbish, am sat watching Martins show as I type, well impressed. As for Disco Wings??? Wot a joke, maybe they should do a program on Aviation museums & their volunteers…. no hang on that means Disco Wings would have a new program on it Oh my!!! :diablo:

Twofour, some people have been asking if the series will get a terrestrial viewing and also if DVDs will be available. Could you answer both points please?
I never knew Joe Pasquale owned a Yak-52!

Sounds great and congraulations on getting Discovery to actually commission an aviation series that sounds interesting.
Having worked with Martin in the past I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Very telling that it’s not on Discovery Wings though!

More info
I’ve posted more info on this series under the title Martin Shaw TV series. Here’s the gist of it:
I’m the Series Producer of Martin Shaw: Aviators and have a few more details if anyone’s interested.
It’s a six-part series showing at 10pm and 10.30pm on Discovery Real Time on Tuesday 5 December and the following two Tuesdays (12 and 19).
It follows the restoration of Martin Shaw’s Boeing Stearman bi-plane which crashed in front of his eyes at Old Buckenham a couple of years ago. It was written off, but Black Barn Aviation in Norfolk took the bag of bits and turned it back into the beautiful and flyable aircraft it is today.
Apart from keeping an eye on the restoration, Martin Shaw spends the series meeting pilots of other remarkable aircraft and, when he’s lucky, getting a flight in some of them.
His ultimate dream was to take the controls of a Spitfire – a bit of a tall order, considering there are only four two-seaters in the country and the costs of going up in them are legendary and virtually prohibitive.
Somehow, we managed it, and Martin had what he described as the ride of his life in it, under the watchful eye of Paul Day, former leader of The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight, and courtesy of that true gentleman, Maurice Bayliss.
Martin also flew a DC-3 with Air Atlantique; went up for a hair-raising flight with his friend Maurice Hammond; met June Marjoram in Norfolk, who keeps a Piper Cub flying in memory of her husband, Robin; and, as Old Fart reported, he got a chance to scream down the runway in Russell Carpenter’s incredible Lightning.
The series has plenty of other aircraft in it that Martin Shaw didn’t get to go up in – for instance, the Yak 52 owned by Joe Pasquale; footballer Les Ferdinand’s Robinson R44 helicopter; Ernie Hoblyn’s magnificent Sopwith Tri-plane replica; Concorde (sadly!) at Filton; and one of Vic Norman’s Stearmans at AeroSuperBatics which took one of our researchers, James Christian, up to cure his fear of flying!
Martin met Wing Cdr Ken Wallis, one of our greatest unsung heroes, for programme one, which goes out tonight (5 Dec). Everyone who has seen the footage of Wing Cdr Wallis flying his autogyro is amazed. He’s over 90, as fit as a flea, and great fun, too. Just spoke to him and he’ll be watching tonight.
The series includes an interview with Prince Michael Of Kent (a phenomenally well-informed aviator with both fixed and rotary-wing licences); a balloon race across South Devon; an interview with Stelios and another young airline operator, Martin Halstead; Eric Moody recreating his astonishing engineless flight over Indonesia; former Concorde Captain Christopher Orlebar, back in the Concorde cockpit; the incredible Hovercam flying camera platform (I’m the idiot being chased around a field by it, like something out of The Prisoner); a peep at the jetpack setting an altitude record for Smirnoff; an interview with rocket-builder Steve Bennett of Starchaser; and a look at Parajet, the flying machine you can keep in the boot of your car and fly virtually anywhere (legally) without a licence.
I hope the series will convey Martin Shaw’s sheer enthusiasm for everything that flies. His face lights up like a schoolboy’s at times, and he really does appreciate how lucky he is to be getting the chance to fly aircraft and meet people that few us have the privilege to do.
Hope this helps
Jon McKnight
