Master and Commander

What was the critical response to this film on these forums? I love the movie, very well played out and engaging (based on Patrick O’brien’s books I hear) and I’m hoping they may try to do more…the ship on which the movie was filmed, the reproduction ‘HMS’ Rose, is a recreation of the original which terrorized Narrangansett bay in Rhode Island and basically led to the creation of the US Navy from what I’ve read…

Anyone know anything of a proposed sequel, by chance? Sure would welcome it…

The Rose was built in Lunenburg Nova Scotia in 1970, as was the replica ship the Bounty built for the movie Mutiny on the Bounty.

The movie title Master and Commander, the Far Side of The World, is a combination of the titles of O’Brian’s 1st and 10th Aubrey-Maturin novels.

The ship the ‘HMS’ Rose is depicted as the fictional French built frigate HMS Suprise in the movie which O’Brian based on the real HMS Suprise which was the French built frigate Unite captured in 1796 which was renamed Suprise by the British because there was already a Unite in the Royal Navy. Complicated.

I liked the books.

The HMS Rose is now part of the Maritime Museum here in San Diego. It is something to see. I hope they do make more movies in the series – but only if they keep the same actors.

Re Master & Commander dont forget Hornblower

Master & Commander is great but don’t forget the Hornblower films or mini series shown on A&E and Meriden TV in the UK.
The Hornblower films are equally magnificent with the square rigger Grand Turk as HMS Indefatigable. I have watched all the films and have all the DVD’s and of course it has its own set of crazy Hornblower fans. Check out their website at www.horatians.org
Like Corsair said I’m also looking forward to more POB ( Patrick O’Brien ) films and Hornblower films with Ioan Grufford as Hornblower.

Isn’t this based on a book series? Read up on that and you will probably find the sequel.
