Afternoon all
It would appear that HBO have given the green light to start production on Masters of the Air , a Television Drama series based on the book of the same name by Donald Caldwell. Steven Speilberg and Tom Hanks are involved, as in Band of Brothers and The Pacific TV series. Given their attention to historical accuracy, can we expect to see a number of B17’s returning across the pond to a suitable location for period accurate filming? Memphis Belle was filmed at Binbrook as we know, but where now would qualify as a suitable airfield location with the correct architecture, that could accommodate this size of production for a couple of months ? Off the top of my head I’m predicting Bicester , but it doesn’t have a concrete runway. Any thoughts ?

The series is, I’m told, now in its script development phase. Apparently an article in FlyPast magazine a few months back carried more details of what it’s likely to include.

I believe that ’12 o’clock High’ was filmed mostly in the US? – I’m sure someone on the forum will know exactly where. I think I read that they imported a few trees and hosed down the runway between takes to make it look more like rainy England. I’m guess we can expect more of the same with this production, and some extras actors with very cute English accents!

Do operators make much money from film or tv work?
I can’t see what the point would be if they didn’t.
Filming of Memphis Belle saw one aircraft lost and several blown engines.
I know of two blown engines, so what were the others?

Glad to hear it – they certainly should and especially if Spielberg is holding the cheque book!

… the title here is in reference to the film’s source material. Specifically the non-fiction work used as reference is Donald Miller’s Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany

If it facilitated Pink Lady to fly again I wouldn’t care how dross the resulting programme was.

Plenty of places in the US could be made to look like the UK, mock towers, hangers could easly be built.
Not sure how many US B17 operators would risk a flight across the pond for a TV programme.
Looking forward to the series should it happen.
