It is now 99% sure that the MATS Connie is sold to a new Korean owner. For at least the 2005 season, it looks as if the machine will remain a flyer, although it is expected to be repainted in a Korean Air Lines livery. Included some pics I took from both in and outside of the MATS machine. BW Roger

Just to be shure about one thing guys, I would of course feel a lot better if this great plane would be preserved as a flying plane. I can’t disagree that the aircraft may have a bit of an uncertain future.
I still hope the new owner has good facillities to display the aircraft and that it is kept in top condition. Maybe it’s wishfull thinking, but it they take good care for her, it might fly again in 2020??? 😮
And yes, that Mosquito story is a sad one … 🙁

As the route is SF, Hawaii, Guam the chanches are zero. It was here (in Holland) not so long ago, in the summer of 99 I think. Based at Twenthe for the time. BW Roger
Seems so silly to ground a perfectly flyable and lets be honest rare Aircraft she was great when toured few years band was lucky to walk through her at Biggin Hill.
I just can’t see the logic of grounding a flyable Aircraft we have no Mossie flying partly due to this and the sad fate of RR299.
Such Aircraft should gather dust or rust they should fly as long as possible.

Richard,
Yes I’ve heard it being up for sale over the past few years also but everytime Verns has beeen ask he has said its not for sale end of subject.
Last Years OShkosh I was standing next to him when a certain well know collector ask him the question and Vern said it might be for sale but he really didn’t want to sell it unless someone here in the States bought it.
Galdri,
I’m not upset I had a great day at work made a boat load of $$$, I don’t like when someone calls someone a Liar and then doesn’t back it up. I will not get drawn into a conversation on this thread about the P-40 thread but I will say this, Paul Coggin is one of the most Respected Researchers that I have ever had the honor of talking to and using for source and I’ll be damn if I’m going to let someone run him down for something that was be-on his controll.
Now back to the MATS Connie thread

While I think it is a real shame the aircraft is going to be grounded, and to my mind with a very uncertain future, there has been ample opportunity for this aircraft to have found a US buyer. I have seen/heard mention on a number of occaisions about it being for sale over the past two years or so. Frustratingly, Rob, I can’t remember where I saw the notices, sorry.

Come back tomorrow when you are feeling a bit better.

This is Crap 😡
I think the US Gov. should step in and stop the sale to anyone outside of the USA, under UNESCO Law they couls and should this aircraft belongs in the States it was never I repeat never a Civilian Airlinner it serve here in the North East of the USA for most of its military life.
And before someone goes now rob back off Vern can do what ever he wants to do with his aircraft your right he can and he should of at least made it aviable to any USA buyer. I know of at least three people who would have purchase it.
I find it rather interesting that the US Warbird Movement didn’t know it was for sale, i sure the Hell didn’t know and i’m involved with Connies here in the State of Maine, the first time I or matter of fact a lot of us heard it was for sale was when someone put up something over on Wixs.
I know guys assocated with MATS bird and they didn’t know it was for sale.

Any idea who the new owner is in Guam and (where) will it be placed on display?
It’s always a bit sad when a historic plane like this is going to be grounded, but at least it’s future is certain and it will be preserved (static) for the future.

Will there be a final opportunity at seeing this plane somewhere in Europe? I never seen the MATS connie and would like to see it, but going to the US or Korea is well outside my budget.

That’s a shame and it has the wrong shape nose for the KAL Connies, which had the original radarless nose as per this shot taken in the early ’60s at Hong Kong.

I am afraid its flying days are over bery soon after 2005. BW Roger

Personally, I don’t mind where it goes, or who buys it, as long as it is looked after and kept flying. I really like the idea of perhaps seeing it make a European tour in Korean Airlines livery for a change, as I’m sure the MATS scheme has been seen and photographed to death!
