Hi,
Just got back from my holidays in Mauritius and whilst out and about in Port Luis the capital i noticed a few coast guard ships in dock. I wondered if anyone knew what they were exactly?? I think the smaller vessels are russian built and the larger one Indian made, but not 100% sure. I believe the Indian navy trains or trained the Mauritian Coast Guard, and even manned the ships until they had Mauritian sailors qualified (according to our tour guide)
Below are the pictures I took, not great quality im afraid, apologies, 😮 but hopefully you can just make them out.

the bigger ship “Valiant” was made in Chile, in Asmar, Talcahuano shipyard

Ja,
I think upwards of 2/3 the Mauritian population is of Indian origin, so Indian CO doesn’t necessarily mean he’s deputed from the Indian navy
Cheers,
Raj

Thanks for the response’s guys, much appreciated :), thought it might be a bit of a dead thread
I believe that the Vigilant, the largest combat ship of the service, is Canadian-built
Thats interesting i will look into that cheers.
Thanks for the sites JonS, just found the official NCG ( what would i do without google :p ) Very imformative indeed, quite an impressive array of ships for a small island nation.
In the better pic of the Vigilant on the official NCG site, has it got a helicopter pad on the back? I did see an alouette heli (i think) flying around our hotel one afternoon, (see picture, again not very good, took it at the last minute before it flew off) Though on the site it only says the NCG has an dornier and defender. The helicopter might be from another force exercising in the area??
Thanks again for your replies

I wonder how many of the 350 members are Indian since there CiC is Indian?

The mission of the 350-member Mauritian Coast Guard (MCG) is to ensure the safety of Mauritian fisherman, prevent smuggling, and protect the marine environment. The MCG inventory includes two Soviet-built surveillance craft, the CGS Rescuer, and the CGS Retriever. Both vessels carry cannons with 1,000-meter-plus precise-target air or marine-surface strike capability. On March 30, 1993, the MCG purchased a 210-ton Indian-built seaward defense boat. This vessel is armed with two Bofors 40/60 guns and carries a thirty-two-member crew. Acquisition of this boat improved the MCG’s coastal surveillance capability. An Indian naval officer commands the MCG; an unknown number of MCG personnel have received training from Indian naval instructors.

Very Very interesting mate thanks for this, tell me mate Vigilant (?) in the first pic and the third pic seems to have some sort of stealth covering on it, do you have a better pic of it?
