May 5th, 2013, fatal crash at Cuatro Vientos

It appears that the FIO at Cuatro Vientos today suffered a tragic fatal accident during the show at Cuatro Vientos, when one of their pilots was killed in the crash of their HA-200 Saeta. The aircraft apparently hit a building at the airport, with another 8 bystanders alledgedly suffering light injuries. My sympathies for the family of the pilot… Link: http://ccaa.elpais.com/ccaa/2013/05/05/madrid/1367756324_631302.html

Not speculation but fact- in its final seconds the aeroplane had a very major rate of descent, despite a slightly nose high attitude, probably outside the parameters of a 1950’s era ejection seat.

We can not know if he decided to ( as the press love to say) stay with his doomed plane. The transition from controlled flight to uncontrolled descent was probably too quick for many decisions at all.

Looking at the Sky News coverage the aircraft appears to be in control until the last seconds of the crash . I don’t think the rudder played a massive factor in the crash.

A terrible loss, RIP

Apparently when he lost control of the plane (still speculate the causes, but everything points to a failure in the rudder), the pilot could have jumped, but waited to prevent Saeta crashed in the area where it was located on public.

The plane belonged to the FIO (Fundación Infante de Orelans), an association well known in Spain aeronautics. The pilot was experienced, and belonged to the Spanish Air Force (EdA)

Its been a awful week or so for accidents, I feel for the family and friends of the pilot lost here and in other recent accidents, lets hope this is the last such tragic event of 2013.
This is the only Hispano HA-200 Saeta I have really seen photos of on the net and I was hoping to attend a airshow in Spain this year to see her and some of the other rarities based there.

Extremely sad the pilot lost his life but it looks like it could of been a lot worse.
