Maybe a dumb question- Why did Sadam send his AF to Iran?

I have always wondered why Sadam sent his Air Force to shelter in Iran rather than in Syria. Iraq-Syrian relations were much better than with Iran… was Sadam hoping that Iran was going to help him?
