Mods, a date or year in the thread title would be great.

It still is pretty much unheard of, as there are currently no WWII German combat aircraft currently airworthy in Europe.

I went to Duxford to see Black 6 when it made its first public appearance as seeing an original German WW2 aircraft in the air was really something special then. It still is but “back then” it really was something unheard of.

Damm I wish I’d seen those 2 fly together that year, great footage

Agree, that is some cracking footage.

I was lucky enough to see Black 6 at one of the Shuttleworth shows – not sure which year, but great memories of that incredible whine and all that power.

I think there is an airworthy German G in the US as well, ex Bulgarian, but all the rest barring Black 6 are re engined Buchons. Black 2 is a bitsa and certainly has Buchon wings, but the original restorer was always a bit cagey about how much of the rest was Spanish. I believe the tail unit is original G10 which gave the rebuild its identity but how much of the rest of it is a German G is unknown

Was Black 6 the only true 109 to be restored to fly, the other 109’s being composites of some sort. Re-engined Buchons, made from multiple airframes etc?

Only 109G I think. There are couple of 109E’s, Paul Allen has one and there is one in Canada I believe which may be for sale.

Black 2 was only at Duxford from 1995.

Seem to remember it having a problem at one of the Duxford shows in 95, possibly the VE Day Airshow or possibly a OFMC flying day.

It was the OFMC’s Midsummer Flying Day that June.

Sad that some people have no idea about thoroughbreds, as most “warbirds” are.
But cheer up “The Grand National” has been transferred to Blackpool & will be run on the beach with Donkeys !!!!!!

As for the recent prang to the German example , and to echo many other comments, the pilot did an excellent job in getting it down quickly and with little damage. ( Just wish some people on some forums would stop putting silly comments about these aircraft being “aerobatted” , or flown too harshly ).

I couldn’t agree more.

The pilot did a textbook forced landing with minimal damage to the airframe.

I too thought some of the comments on other forums regarding “these types of aircraft” (Don’t most people consider them replicas anyway?) not being “aerobatted” etc. were a load of B******s! (As if it’s going to be the cause an engine failiure).

At least with an aerobatic display, you have plenty of speed and therefore energy, so if you do have something like an engine problem, you have a better chance of making a successful forced landing.

A low energy, low level “gentle curving” display like some want, isn’t the best if you have such a problem.

Cheers

Paul

Then this is the day it had trouble VE day display 1995. It looks very green in the country side so that would fit. I was working in the Middle East from August 95 although I did attend the 1996 Legends airshow on the Saturday when back on holiday. Not sure Black 2 was around that day.

It was at North Weald where it flew with the BBMF and Black 6, and it either 95 or 96 when Mark Hanna had to make that landing.

I took the photos and can’t remember the year or the show, although I thought it was 1993. Maybe I saw it twice but here is another shot to jog some memories
