This plane is a romanian bf109g that was painted in crude US markings to fly to Italy after Romania surrendered in August 1944, to plan the return of all US (and allied?) prisoners of war.

It is probably captured by Americans somewhere in north Africa or Italy.

Not much help but I have seen it before, possibly in an old Profile. Something to do with an escape/defection, and I think not a Luftwaffe machine. All very vague memories though.
