Just on the BBC News website, and there must be a shortage of news today because there was an article about plane spotters going to Manchester Airport to see the Russians arrive.
Apparently the airport had “600 advance bookings for the viewing area car park!”😮

well everyone, at least us spotters have a hobby, something to do with our spare time, we should be proud of ourselves, at least we dont act like thugs, take drugs, drink ourselves to oblivion and cause untold violence like alot of our fellow citizens……lets be proud of our hobby, we are above all that.
Spotter 4 ever !!!!
Speak for yourself! :p I’m a student also (for a couple more weeks at least), so as well as enjoying all things aviation that certainly features on my list 😀

I have never really been one for spotting but that has put me off even more.
It hasn’t done me any harm over the years. (I started in 1965 and I’m still at it!)
What it has done for me is; see me travel to every Continent except Antarctica, see local sights that tourists never do, meet local people, make lots of friends and thoroughly enjoy myself 🙂
I’ve been very lucky as I’ve always had a job to support my hobby, pay the mortgage and despite being an anorak, I’ve been happily married for 29 years.
One of the nicest compliments I’ve had was from one of my employer’s helicopter pilots. I was bumming a ride and whilst chatting to the crew the subject came up and the pilot (who knew me quite well in a professional capacity) said “you’re a spotter? – you don’t look like an anorak” 😀
I suppose image is everything, most strangers are surprised when I tell them and the first comment is nearly always; ‘don’t get arrested like those in Greece’

Oh and not many consider them to be representatives of Scotland.
Fully agree Allen, these morons, thankfully, take nothing to do with Scotland, no other Scottish club or supporters of the Tartan Army on tour bring home headlines like thursdays
I sometimes think there ought to be a decent documentary film made that properly represents the hobby. Hmmmm….
I’m sure there is someone here who happens to be a BBC cameraman that could pull some strings there 🙂 🙂
I found the “article” quite laughable, full of inaccuracies, as per gutter journalism. TBH folk don’t get why we do what we do, because it is seen as a “minority” hobby. This is just a third rate journalist not good enough to be sent to cover the major news events of the UEFA final aftermath (which believe me, the presss, cops, city council were made well aware of long before it happened… track records and all) so this muppet was told go write a silly pointless story from the AVP for page 32.
Don’t take it to heart.

‘North West Tonight’ did an item on this as well
was quite funny to watch!
Some random reporter trying her hand at spotting. LOL

It’s retards like that, which give a bad name to ‘Spotters’.
That’s a bit harsh, Sam.
I know the chaps whose interviews were aired and, while I doubt they would be anyone’s first pick to take part in University Challenge, they’re decent enough folk.

They should of interviewed me..but then again, I doubt they would have been able too air it!
By: Ren Frew - 16th May 2008 at 14:55
They chose their interviewees very carefully, didn’t they?
You’ll probably find they interviewed a wide cross section of types, what happens in the editing suite though is another matter. Bah, if only I still worked in ENG, I’d have done much better shots of the Trident, not to mention a better shot of the lovely Ms Sims derriere ! 😉 😀

I remember seeing a similar thing on the news here a few years back at Sydney airport..they made sure they interviewed the the pimple faced youth with glasses ..or the lad struggling to string a few words together..trying to make out only certain types had this strange hobby

Don’t get wound up by this weasel failure of a journalist. He’s only trying it to get on people’s nerves, to stir up a little controversy.
Let’s just ignore him and next week he’ll back writing ground breaking articles on the latest ‘Tuck shop disturbance’ at Droylsden Junior and Infant School

Oh dear.
Some 200,000 Scots football “anoraks” descended on Manchester. The vast majority of them enjoyed everything bar the result. They enjoyed a drink, a community atmosphere and the experience of a UEFA Cup Final.Conversely, a minority of the Scots contingent, some fuelled by drink, some by disappointment (I expect others had altogether more sinister motives), decided to turn the City Centre into a battlefield. Who are the ones to be criticised and reviled? You know, as an aviation enthusiast, who had the better day yesterday.
At least Manchester only had them for a day or two, we have to suffer them week in week out. Oh and not many consider them to be representatives of Scotland. Did you see many St Andrews flags yesterday ?
Back to the topic.. I’m often accused of ‘anorakism’ due to my appreciation of the ‘romance of flight’. I sometimes think there ought to be a decent documentary film made that properly represents the hobby. Hmmmm….

Oh dear.
I see absolutely no reason to be riled over the article. Those that are, might I suggest, are a little self conscious about the hobby themselves.
Relax, rejoice in your “anorakdom” You are safe in the knowledge that your spotting/photography did no one ANY harm at all, tou indulged in some healthy exercise moving to various spots and YOU enjoyed it. That is ALL that matter.

You know the real problem the reporter had? The simple inability to understand that the hobby has many facets, and yes, it has its share of eccentrics. You’ve all come across them. I rather suspect that the negativity is sometimes a misconstrued form of jealousy. A whole day’s enjoyment without getting ratted? How can that possibly be?
Enjoy your hobby, be it spotting or photography. As long, of course, as you continue to share your photo’s.
My particular brand of anorakdom? Was a spotter but a long period of forced inactivity caused my interest to wane. Now I spend much of my spare time visiting Cemeteries and researching and recording the lives of our War dead. No hobby is any more important than another.

It doesn’t make my blood boil at all. Not one bit. In fact the only effect it has on me is to make me happy I have enough going on in my life that I don’t need to publicly ridicule something other people enjoy for the sake of fueling my own ego.
Simon Donohue must be one very unhappy and shallow man if he feels the need to write in the manner he has in this article just to make his day feel worthwhile. 🙂

Again, the media hyping over what they don’t understand, yes some people take photos some registrations we are all allowed hobbies, the above being civilized and to some extent people socializing with one another, why does this make us anoraks’!
Now on the other hand I track to the football supporters of yesterday, again there chosen hobby, but after having to walk though the center of Manchester this morning it was like a war torn state, in fact it was disgusting, the while center was full of broken glass, rubbish and the air stunk of urine and vomit, I have never seen anything like this before.
So media, take the two of the above, I know who I would be focusing my issues with.
Rant over
