Medium sized fighters, the worst compromise?

With all that talk about LWF and HWF fighters, what about them medium weights. primarily the F-18 series, MiG-29 variants, Rafale and Typhoon.

The main advantage with lighter weight aircrafts is that they tend to be single engined, cheaper to maintain, have a smaller RCS and could be used in quantity. They usually have less super goodly range and carrying capabilities.

The heavy weight fighters, long a tall long legged blonde, offers much more leg range. It also carries much more and has more room for everything, it’s only flaw is a larger RCS and operating costs. aircraft in this area are few, and generally is the F-15, F-15, Su-3X, etc

but what about the Medium range fighters.. they are much more expensive than their single engined equivelent i.e F-18 vs F-16C. They have two engines like heavier fighters, thus also a bit more prone to maintenance issues.. but do not have the range of their bigger bruders. so what say you on these aircraft.. a bad compromise of both sides?
