Meet up in Scotland

Uncle Keith has kindly offered 2 days of his time to give us a tour of the Museum of Flight at East Fortune . The dates have been fixed as the 26th/27th of April , the schedule has still to be finalised but Uncle Keith is trying to get us access to some hardware and hopefully we will be treated to one or two of his slide shows . Hopefully Keith will be able to post details of the weekend quite soon , I’ll try and post the addresses of some reasonable B+B’s as soon as I can , the Saturday night liquid refreshment session is optional but is highly recommended .

Thanks for the invite, but i’m not sure it’s possible – i’ll look into it though, significant other would like to come to if it’s possible, but it’s a question of time off work around the weekend as well as funds. She’s a big fan of Blenheims and Vulcans.

If we can’t make it and don’t get any pics – would be delighted to host any that people would like on the web but don’t have their own site or somewhere else they go. (Goes for any museum too)

Before i forget. If anyone has a club/society/website they would like listed – drop me a line and it will go in the links section of the new version of Museum-Explorer which is about a month away.

Cheers [/QUOTE

Be good if you can make it Sibs , let us put a face to the name !!! , just explain to the good lady that she can have the first go in the Vulcan and the Bolingbroke/Blenheim , even if you could nip up for just one of the days , my good lady will be there too . It will probably be the last chance to get some shots of LA198 before she goe’s to Kelvingrove.

Sibs , come up in April to our get together , they have LA198 sitting just inside Hangar 2 ‘s doors , if you asked nicely I think they would be willing to roll the doors open to get some good shots , could be last chance before she goes indoors permanently thru in Glasgow!!!!!!!

We have a few more.

I host my pics on a website I run with a few others, inc Andy Dawson who does the Mossie.org website.

There are more piccys taken at East Fortune, inc the Rest Hanger – you may like a look – it’s all free. The URL is:

Museum-Explorer

Actually, i’d be really interested to see pics of how things have developed and Spitifre LA198 now it’s completed.

RD220

Was lucky to be able to arrange a visit back in August 2001, including the restoration hanger – very nice people at East Fortune.

Sorry for the dodgy colour with the pics – but i’d only just got my digital camera.

Steve ,
Our intention is to half drown you in beer , then lock you in the restoration hangar for 2-3 years , we will allow you exercise once a day and three meals , all engineering supplies will be passed through a secure hatch until job is done .
Naw , seriously , it will be good to have someone who knows their way round a Beaufighter , I’ve never even seen one at all in the flesh !!!!!!. However the beer/whisky section of the weekend is not optional , this is mandatory !!! ( any chance of bringing up any illicit photos you have of your Beau ???)

Alastair, I’m getting a bit worried now – either you’re vastly over-estimating my importance, or you Scottish lads are planning on ambushing this “southern softie” and attempting to drown him in beer! Both of which scenarios are getting a bit bl**dy frightening! 😮

Sorry Neilly,

This has been already organised for April and already quite a few have organised their weekend around it. This put with the fact that the contributors have organised to have the time to come down here is another factor why it cant be put off. The main reason being we have already organised it with the Museum of Flight at East Fortune. Or should I say Keith Mac organised it with them. So really it is all set to go but everyone is welcome.

Umm, an idea. How about a bunch of us southern pansies getting together, hiring a people carrier, and heading up north for this? Its a long trek, and plenty of fuel to go independently, but split between us it may be more do-able. I dunno how we could arrange it, but perhaps we can. what do you think?

Hi Steve,

There was talk of us being allowed access to the Restoration area when Keith talked with the acting curator now acting general manager. But who knows that might all be changed during the day but no doubt the M of F staff will do their best by us to let us see the restoration hangar as it is by prior notice that anyone can view this hangar.

Should be a good day. My Brother and Dad are coming to the meet as is a guy who lived at Drem when the war was on. His father was chief electrical engineer for Drem airfield and it was him and a spitfire pilot who pioneered the Drem Lighting System.

A very interesting guy to talk to. Full of other stories as well. He had 609 pilot Peter Drummond-Hay and his wife and 2 dogs living with him at the time.

Only one other thing to say Steve. If you are coming to the meet and want to photo the beau bring a bloody good camera and flash as it is very dark in the restoration hangar.

Cheers

Steve , If your coming up here I’m damn sure were getting a look at the Beaufighter even if it means storming the building with boltcutters .

I’ve been called many things over the years, but ‘guru’ is a first for me, and is unduly flattering. Thanks anyway though mate. 🙂
