Just watched a B movie called ‘Megalodon’ that was’nt bad, the premise centered around a large drilling complex that goes further into the muck at the bottom of the sea than ever before and opens a pathway to another ocean level still running on prehistoric time….and releasing all of its contents into our modern day world and ocean, including a 60 foot Megalodon shark, which of course starts attacking everything in sight-submersibles, the oil rig, knocks holes through ice floes while trying to get at the helicopter…in the end one of the submersibles is tethered to the shark with explosives and driven right up to the shark’s side and detonated, and we see a low budget front half of the shark slowly gliding down to the sea bottom….not a great flick, but fun (and funny) to watch….
But it begs the question from our shark experts on this site, and I know we have a few….could and DO a few of these incredible monsters still exist, deep down in the blackness of the world’s oceans…or just in the inky blackness of our own imagination and horrors? Checking websites after the movie for info on this monster, I found NOT A LOT to dissuade me from believing that maybe a few of these incredible creatures COULD still exist…as cited by the existence to this day of the 65 million year old Coelecanth fish, discovered at a fish market at the beginning of the 20th century and seen in the waters of South America ever since! Given the number of species we are still discovering each year and the fact that we have barely even scratched the bottom of the ocean as of yet, I have to believe it is POSSIBLE that a few of these things are still buried down there beyond our vision, feeding on giant squid and possibly even modern day whales and such…..and I would very much NOT like to be the one who discovers them!
Your thoughts, gentlemen??
