I know theres a couple of memorials in the village, but there was also a memorial plaque next to the old ident square close to where the old control tower used to be.
Is it still there, and is it still accessable?
I heard somewhere that the whole area had been fenced off for storage or something?

It would have been nearer the northern end, in front of the old Ident square. There was a bench next to it when I visited it in 95.

Good Question.
I was up there last month on a ‘permission granted’ visit to XR724. The hardstanding in front of the hangers is now completely fenced off and 724 sits within that area close to the rubble of the control tower. From memory the memorial should have been close to this spot but I didn’t notice it. Although I’m wondering now whether the memorial is closer to the northern end of the hardstanding.
I can’t think it’s been removed – I probably just missed it. I quite liked the fact that it was there but it seemed odd given that it was inaccessible to general public.
Hopefully someone more observant has made a visit recently…..

I last visited 2 years ago, when i was asked to leave by 2 ladies in a 4×4!
Seems a bit strange to have a memorial where it can’t be seen!
Must pay a visit in December when I return to the UK
Glad to see I’m not the only one who’s been booted off site then. I was poking around near the nissen huts taking photos the other week and was told to leave.
Strangely, the person who initially asked what I was upto was fine once I explained. However, the person who’s huts they were then came up and, despite my attempts at reason, informed me I was not welcome and to leave the site.
As a result I decided not to bother doing any more poking around. However, whilst i was there I did see a fence that appeared to be sectioning off the entire area near the tower, and an ariel shot someone posted elsewhere appeared to show the whole area, which is where the memorial is, has been turned into a secure compound. Which is what prompted me to ask if it was still there/accessable?
I think its a shame that the land owners don’t seem to recognise that some people do have a legitimate historical interest in the place. However, from what I could gather from the chap I spoke to was saying, they’ve been getting a lot of break ins lately. Plus I’ve read elsewhere they’ve been having trouble with groups of “urban explorers” targetting the place and trying to get into places that are off limits.
