The Memorial Flight’s original 1 1/2 Strutter has flown
Now carry on talking about Spitfires

A real beauty; the World’s first true Multi Role Combat Aircraft.
I think it got moved to Montrose.
You sure? To my knowledge it was going to be moved into Hangar 4 at East Fortune for trial assembly from late April because the shed it was being built in is too small.

No it’s very much still at East Fortune. See here: http://www.nms.ac.uk/our_museums/museum_of_flight/whats_on/sopwith_strutter.aspx

What a marvellous ethos. Just had a look at the website, I never realised they went back so long and had achieved so many projects!
Yes the Memorial Flight Association is a wonderful operation–staffed by some great people.
It’s amazing isn’t it that not everything good in aviation is on this small pellet of land, but can actually be ‘foreign’.
Travel abroad my friends, it’s amazing what’s out there

Would have been more appropriate on a tomtit but never mind……

Original Clerget. The whole ethos of the Memorial Flight is that you learn nothing by substituting engines or making from tube.

There’s one under construction to fly here at East Fortune, I believe, too.

What’s the rotary powering it? Is it an original Clerget, or does one have to substitute something else nowadays?
Bristols? 😉

Probably my mind playing tricks but it looks like the painter has a sense of humour.
Good grief no, no one in the Memorial Flight has a sense of humour, that would be totally wrong. Oh no no no, all very very serious. Sense of humour? Heaven forbid.

He has, and no, your mind isn’t playing tricks.
Looking forward to the show at LFA myself.

I do like me a nice wood and fabric biplane, though. Very nice.

Looks wonderful and well done to all involved. Nothing wrong with Spitfires and other heavy metal but I do have a particular affection for wood and fabric aeroplanes. As another post says “there is room for everyone”.

No, full scale.
It says ‘1/2 Strutter!’ (sorry!)
By: Andy in Beds - 2nd May 2012 at 15:38
That’s half scale???
No, full scale.

Fantastic, beutifull to see. Well done all involved and I agree with Andy what an interesting time for WW1 aviation around the world. I just wish we could get Airshows in the UK to get a little more interested and work out that there is more than Spitfire’s and Mustang’s out there!
